Shooty Marines request; 1850

I had this request in person and thought to post it so will keep questioner anon unless they wish to disclose themselves. Was asked for my opinion on the list shown below in italics. Not a great list and I asked if he was trying for a shooting Vanilla marine list w/as little mech as possible, which was correct though he seemed fine with Speeders. So let's look at the list which seems very 4th ed and see what changes are to be made.

Pedro kantor 175

Master of the forge 100
conversion beamer 20

TOTAL: 1850

Well first off, one of the HQs has to go. We'd think Kantor because he adds scoring Sternies to the army and that's about it. Stubborn is okay but the +1A radius and his purpose just don't fit the army whilst the MotF w/Beamer does. Next is the power weapons, storms & lascannons making the army really inefficient and rather lacking in actual firepower. So let's see if we can keep the theme whilst not auto-losing against an actual shooty army.

The Sterngaurds w/Lascannons are a decent buy and add some high strength and low ap shots to this type of list. We'll keep them but drop the power weapons as they are not needed. We also want our Speeders to do something and not fold like paper when shot at which means being able to move, shoot and gain cover. Typhoons are the best bet for this job and fit in perfectly with the range this list is operating at. Keeping with foot SM we need Devastators and missile launchers are the best priced item there, even if a bit expensive still. If we have the points getting 10 man squads to combat squad is useful. We've already decided on MotF w/Beamer and Scouts w/Cloaks can really take advantage of the fortified building (I also think the individual wanted to use Scouts) so Scouts as our Troops w/Cloaks, Snipers & a ML. Let's see how many squads we can fit in then.

For 1515 we get 3 of each squad mentioned above (Devs x5 w/2 MLs) + MotF giving us 335pts to play with. We could fill out the Dev squads to 10 men each with 4 MLs so they can combat squad with 5 pts spare. This gives us 6 LCs, a CB, 12 Snipers and 21 missile shots heading downwind on T1. Not hugely scary but considering the contraints, not too bad though I think GWvsJohn's attempt at foot BA w/downwind firepower is more balanced and impressive. This list obvioulsy suffers from mobility issues and is essentially a hold-over from previous editions (with the original attempting to get as much lascannons out there). Good for a fun army and considering the restraints, not bad. Here's the list:

HQ -
MotF w/Conversion Beamer

Elites -
Sternguard x5 w/2 lascannons
Sternguard x5 w/2 lascannons
Sternguard x5 w/2 lascannons

Troops -
Scouts x5 w/Missile Launcher, Camo Cloaks
Scouts x5 w/Missile Launcher, Camo Cloaks
Scouts x5 w/Missile Launcher, Camo Cloaks

Fast Attack -
Land Speeder Typhoon
Land Speeder Typhoon
Land Speeder Typhoon

Heavy Support -
Devastators x10 w/4x missile launchers
Devastators x10 w/4x missile launchers
Devastators x10 w/4x missile launchers

Totals: 1995
Tanks: 3
Infantry: 61

Any thoughts on how this list can be run better or made semi-respectable for 5th edition?

If he has a DIY color scheme, tell him to run a space wolf or black templar list. Those are really the only foot-only marine lists that are decent.

Aye Wolves are the obvious choice w/some TWC but pretty sure he wanted to use the Vanilla SM book for it.

Vanilla doesn't do infantry gunlines well, it's the lack of mobility and crowd control really.

SW, BT or BA is what I'd go for too.

The devastators aren't a favored unit, even for gunlines.

What you want to do is something like this, for added dakka.

Master of the forge - conversion beamer - 120

Sternguard - twin lascannons, razorback; linked plasmagun, lascannon, hunter-killer - 240
Sternguard - twin lascannons, razorback; linked plasmagun, lascannon, hunter-killer - 240

Scouts - sniper rifles, heavy bolter - 85
Scouts - sniper rifles, heavy bolter - 85
Scouts - 10 men, sniper rifles, heavy bolter - 150

2 landspeeders - heavy bolters, typhoon launchers - 180
2 landspeeders - heavy bolters, typhoon launchers - 180
2 landspeeders - heavy bolters, typhoon launchers - 180

predator destructor - hunter-killer - 95
predator destructor - hunter-killer - 95
predator destructor - hunter-killer - 95

Predators and landspeeders mainly focus on killing infantry, but can kill tanks, too.
Scouts are only there because rifles are much better than bolters, and they mainly deal with infantry and monsters.
Sternguard and razorbacks shoot vehicles, but can hurt infantry badly if it gets close.
The master lets you reinforce the cover of something, and that's pretty much the only reason he's in the list.

Since you'll be going to ground with your scouts the moment someone devotes fire to them, you don't really need cloaks.
You'll have a 3+ cover save in your bolstered terrain piece, anyway, and anything that really wants your scouts dead is going to get close, and just torch them.

Except the request was for a pure foot list.
