Email in: Ork lotza dreads

Modelsnottoys

"Hey Kirby,

Been trying to nail down a decent Ork list for my next army. I like the idea of running alot of deff dreads and killa kans. so heres what ive worked up

Big Mek-'Evy Armor, Cybork, Kustom Force Field-100
Lootas(10)-big mek-175
Deff Dread- 3x DCW, Skortcah-95
Deff Dread- 3x DCW, Skortcah-95
Deff Dread- 3x DCW, Skortcah-95
Shoota Boyz (30)-Power Klaw, Bosspole-220
Shoota Boyz (30)-Power Klaw, Bosspole-220
Warbuggys(3)-TL-Rokkits-105
Warbuggys(3)-TL-Rokkits-105
Warbuggys(3)-TL-Rokkits-105
Killa Kans(3)-Rokit-150
Killa Kans(3)-Rokit-150
Killa Kans(3)-Grotzooka-135

So three dread spread with Big Mek using force field and lootas and boyz behind them as they march. Kans in the back shooting at transports and warbuggys running interference in mid field killing whatever they can.

Thanks
Wesley"

You can only get one Deff Dread as a Troops per Big Mek. What I'd try and do is this - two Big Mekgs with KFF, nothing else. Two-three smallish Loota squads (5-10) in size, this will depend upon your other points. Two Deff Dreads as 'Troops' to provide some more combat punch. They aren't super viable and Kanz are better as you can take them in squads, are super cheap and have guns at BS3 but if you like the theme that's cool. Then take your SHoota Boyz and make them smaller squads (10-12) in Trukks with Big Shootas and a PK Nob. You may have to drop some warbuggies to fit this in but you then have four actual scorers which jump out of their Trukks when they get to midfield (and thus generate more targets), 11 dreadnought like Orky things, 2 KFF points (and with the latest FAQ for KFF this is important), 6-9 buggies for extra rokkits and then lootas for ranged dakka.

Having fought the 9 Kan + Dread combo on many many occasions I can say it is quite intimidating if it presses forward at top speed. Keep the KFF close and don't stop to shoot, just keep running. If you slow down or stop, you will get hurt.

I really believe you need more scoring units, 2 will not cut it. I've rarely if ever seen an ork army with less than 4 and usually they're maxed out.
your suggested list is almost exactly what i run in my ork list. its really fun to play, but it has a couple of problems (besides the inherent orky problems).
it is a HUGE army. by that i mean that it takes up massive amount of space and can cockblock itself if you misdeploy even a little bit. lootas get LOS blocked by trucks and kans quite often.

the shooting phases take forever. you roll an insane amount of dice for little to no effect. this is fine for casual games, but in a tournament, this combined with a lengthy movement phase (making sure to keep elements under the KFF domes) can easily make games go to time. god forbid you come up against another hordey army.

having a bosspole and eavy armor on the nobz in the truck mobs ive found is vital. being able to keep a boy alive by putting a hit on the nob and then saving it is great for such puny squads. the boss pole is necessary for when the truck inevitably gets wrecked and the boyz get pinned. boyz are pretty worthless as a general rule, but they are atrocious when sitting in the open with their fungus in their hands.

If I ran orks, I would run a list with Kans and Dreads, they're just so awesome.

Absolutely. Closely followed by buggies. And the old gretchin-launcher thing.
I don't think it's a good idea to spent too many points on a Nob for the Trukk boyz (46 points for a unit that is a rapidfiring tactical squad away from death). Saturating the board with small vehicles (that could all have potentially a 4+ save from the KFF) would work better.
Some thing like:
2 x Big Mek, KFF
3 x 5 Lootas
2 x Deff Dread (4 DCCW)
2 x 11 Shoota Boys, Big Shoota, Trukk
12 Shoota Boys, Big Shoota, Trukk
10 Gretchin
3 x 3 Warbuggies, TL rokkit
2 x 3 Killa Kan, Rokkit
3 Killa Kan, Grotzooka

That's a whooping 20 vehicles that you can split in two fronts and have them all with a 4+ cover save. Good luck carrying them around though!
maybe use the dred mob list from IA8?

The dread mob list is pretty good (in the sense that you can take LOTS and LOTS of stompy dreads) but also lacks some of the things Ork players take for granted.

For one, your FOC is all mixed up from normal. Kans squadron 3 to 5 and go in the Fast Attack slot. Dreads go 1 to 3 in the troops slot (no need for big meks, though you probably will anyway). So if you want to load up on kans - and you WANT to load up on kans - you'll have to leave the buggies at home... or more like, buggies aren't even an available option in this list. Lootas are heavy support, which would SUCK except that most of the good stuff in Heavy Support got moved elsewhere, so you're okay on that score.

Your specialists can generally take a transport of some type as a dedicated transport. Might be a Scrap Trukk (basic trukk with 'eavy armor and more gun options, but not Fast) or a Looted Wagon.

Your boyz squads take a big hit, though; no nobs! That means no Klaws. Somewhat less of a problem given the fact that you're going to be saturating the table with units with DCCW, but you've got to remember no hidden klaws on the boyz squads you do need to take for objective-holding. On top of that, no bosspole either! And your grots aren't as good either - a point more expensive, and all they get out of it are grenades which kill grots when they get used.

You can take "Cybork Slashas", which are nobs with cybork bodies and a painboy already baked in. No dedicated transport option for this unit, though you've got plenty of transport options available.

Fast Attack is going to be kans, kans, kans. If for some daft reason you didn't want to take 15 killa kans in a list (are you sure you're in the right place?), you can take Grot Tanks for fun, or Warkoptas (finally, orks with a skimmer!)

Heavy Support is lootas, plus your choice of the lifta wagon (a very expensive battlewagon with a never-miss ability to pick up and fling enemy tanks, doing D6 glancing hits a turn plus damage to stuff that gets landed on - this thing is the closest Orks get to FW madness!) or a big trakk (12/11/10 heavy trukk thing, not fast, terrain rerolls and can mount one of basically any big gun; most of them not worth it because of BS2, but consider the Supa Kannon for long-range large blast AP3 support).

One additional piece of weirdness - the Mekboy Junka, a 65-point Rhino with a free Deff Rolla and three big shootas (swap 'em free for skorchas, or upgrade to some other stuff). Dedicated transport for big meks, elite choice otherwise. Most noteworthy for the cheap rolla and for two upgrade options - a KFF (!) or a turret-mounted SAG (!!)

So kans on the table, a couple dreads, some lootas, some small boyz squads to hold the objectives, a KFF mek or two (in a junka!), then add stuff to taste. Definitely the most mech an ork army will ever get...
I absolutely adore the Dread Mob list.
So many things about it are better than the regular Ork list, with the one lament of decreased melee power. The lack of a Warboss isn't THAT bad, as the Paindoc makes his squad 50% more hard to kill, but the lack of Nobs in Boyz units can really suck if you want to run big numbers of them.

Big Trakks are awesome. They are so much better than Battlewagons, mostly just because they can admit that they're not wanna-be Land Raiders, and are cheaper for it.

I LOVE the Lifta Wagon.
