Email in: & 1850 Space Wolves Army List

"Like everyone, I'm trying to make a competitive all-comers list. I'm an old Space Wolf player. I started Warhammer back in 3rd edition when the Space Wolf release was fresh and was hooked. I had played a heavily mechanized list with lots of Blood Claws and did fairly well in tournaments (I think I still have the trophy for a local doubles tournament where I came in second place with my friend) but never got heavily into competitive play due to school.

Anyways, I don't have that army anymore. It was destroyed in an accident in my parent's garage before I moved out. Nothing was really salvageable unfortunately, though I understand the Land Raider Crusader was intact enough to make a good Battle Wagon conversion for a friend of mine.

This time around I want to avoid the mechanized list. Of course, the current archetype is mechanized, but whatever. I don't like to do what everyone else is doing anyways and I'm aware of the disadvantages.

So, I have two lists here. I think the second list is the stronger and I need to make it better. The first list is just a 'neat idea' type list and is what I started out with. I have been playing 5th Edition Space Wolves against primarily Tyranids and Chaos Space Marines so it might be skewing my build. I also play against Black Templar, Imperial Guard, Orks, Eldar, and possibly Tau if we can get the hermit out of his cave.

I personally love/hate Thunderwovles (they're silly but the stat line is attractive) and I don't use special characters. Personally, I think some special characters break the game and are incredibly overpowered for their point cost but I have no problem facing them, and expect to. This may also explain some of my choices.

Tear 'em apart! I think the second list is better than the first but I'm still not happy with it.

~80 Space Wolves on the table is a bit intimidating. Normally I only field 4 Grey Hunter packs, but this allows maximum number of scoring units and Grey Hunters are fairly reliable (not like I have much of an alternative). Total points is 1850 exactly though, so not much room to play with unless I just ditch Grey Hunter packs.

Long Fang fire support should be able to pop enough tanks or T6 critters to support the Grey Hunters, especially with a Grey Hunter pack in the back field some games to defend the Long Fangs.

Given the number of Marine players and how often T6 creatures show up in 'Nid lists, the Plasma Guns have been useful. They can hurt up to Armor 12 (and can glance AV 13). I'm sure I won't always be lucky but so far it hasn't been too much of a problem.

Positioning the Lone Wolves and Wolf Lord will be key as they'll be needed to rescue any Pack that gets stuck in with something to tough for it to handle. Normally I throw Wolf Guard in for the Power Fist (I'm removing my normal Power Fists from my Grey Hunters. Every game I've played with the new Codex has proved how much of a waste of 25pts it is to include it. It never hits or wounds!)

Overall, effective against other Infantry based lists and Tyranids but that's probably really it. Hoofing it isn't too bad on an 8'x4' table since 2/3 games are playing short ways, but you can't change your mind usually when you go for an objective after two turns.

List #2

This is is closer to what I normally field. I don't normally use Lone Wolves that much and I'm wondering if I even need two of them (or any of them) with my Wolf Lord. I'd love to roll with a third Long Fang Pack and more Grey Hunters if I can, but it doesn't leave many points for other options at times.

I'm thinking if I drop one of both Lone Wolves I could add Terminator armor to the Wolf Guard. I'd love to max them out and bring two Cyclone Missile Launchers if I can.

Total points for this list are 1823 currently. In test games I've ran with Combi weapons for the Wolf Guard in the Grey Hunter packs and adding a Wolf Tail Talisman to the Wolf Lord. I've also ran with Runic Armor and Meltabombs on the Wolf Priest. Both have their strong points but the difference wasn't all that grand in the small handful of games I've been able to test it out with.

I definitely miss the third Long Fang pack and feel I might need more bodies. 63 models in this list.

If you're going foot Space Wolves - where are the TWC? Love/hate relationship aside, that's what makes foot SW scary. Also - no Wolf Guard for Grey Hunters? I'm assuming in the 2nd list you're doing the Priest + Wolf Guard concept in relation to the first part of your e-mail which leaves your scoring guys a bit vulnerable. Getting two squads of five guys with CMLs and dropping the guys in the Grey Hunter squads isn't a bad idea (with the CML ones jumping into plasmagun squads and holding backfield objectives - would probably make them 5x strong as well).

Also - why the mixed weapons on long fangs? You've obviously bought the Devastator boxes and used what was in there but even with split fire...eh. What this list needs is something actually scary coming towards them (lots of Grey Hunters is cute but doesn't scare some heavy hitters out there) such as TWC and the firepower coming over their shoulders to give mech pause whilst the meltagun Grey Hunters get into place. This generally means Rune Priests and Long Fangs (and CML Wolf Guard if you can).

Those are the changes I'd be looking to make to the final list. No need for Lone Wolves, Wolf Lord or Wolf Priest whilst beefing up the Wolf Guard squads to access CMLs and then Thunderwolf Cavalry. Do a conversion you like which isn't silly as it gives your army much more mobility and the ability to operate as an effective foot list.
