"Hello again! Your blog is still awesome, can't get enough. Keep up the good work!
So a friend and I were bouncing around ideas for 1850 lists and I decided to see just how much firepower you can pack in a list. Originally this started out because of a Blood Angels list but quickly became vanilla marines because of a thread on DakkaDakka. The more I think about this list, the more annoying it seems it would be to play against it.
Before I arrange a variety of proxy matches I thought I'd bounce it off of you. I imagine you will say lack of mobility is a problem, but I think there is enough firepower in the list to even the playing field pretty much immediately. Let me know what you think!

Total Points: 1850
14 Missile Launchers, 8 Lascannons, 4 Meltaguns, 4 Combi-Melta, and an Orbital Strike. 7 to 11 scoring units. 101 power armored marines on the table.
I have a dark suspicion this list is attractive on paper but may be worthless on the field if the terrain isn't right. Still, 10/11 units that can blow up tanks at range is nice. Kill points may be scary, but there's something about it that's appealing.
So, terribad?"
Short answer - yes. It's just not that much damage output and is a very static army. 100+ Marines is great, particularly with a lot of them being scoring options but it becomes a game of "can you kill enough of my army to actually win the game" type game rather than a game of tactics. And if you take this to NOVA styled missions, well that game gets thrown out the window and your opponent will generally beat you on some front.
I think your initial thought of running this as BA is the better idea (oddly). Running foot Devastators and Sternguard with a couple Scouts and babysitting Priests is going to give you nearly the same firepower for roughly the same cost (minus the Tacticals of course). The units are also more durable with the Priest(s). Rest of your points goes into ASM and you have a mobile force enabling a more balanced game structure and a basic extension of the Blood Hammer concept. You've still got a lot of Marines (with FNP) and a fair firebase with the missile Devs, Scout squad or two and some Sternguard but you've also got a forward element which can assault and has melta weapons and you can actually aggressively engage the enemy rather than stand and shoot.
