GWvsJohn's Adventures in Vassal, Chapter 2: Necromunda

We've all seen them. It's not every day on Vassal, but it happens. Those two old friends, separated due to college, pushing a seemingly random assortment of sprites around a 4'x4' board, following the arcane 2nd edition rules. We know what's going on. They're playing Necromunda, and we're jealous.

Necromunda on Vassal makes a lot of sense. Many turn to Vassal because they don't have the time to play tabletop: Necro games are shorter than the usual 40k. The big downside to Vassal is that it's full of randoms, noobs and assholes: Necro lends itself to a league/campaign with people you already know and trust. Converting that random heavy who has a plasma gun, laspistol and a bionic eye is a huge pain: Vassal sprites are easy to label.

The problem of course is gathering that group that is willing and able to play regularly. I'm willing to put in some time and effort organizing a campaign. I can set up a Google Group (or something similar) to monitor the gangs. I can keep master track of games and gang changes. I can set up more fluff-type events and special games if the campaign is running smoothly.

So it really falls to you. Are any of you interesting in joining a Vassal Necromunda league? I'm starting here for the same reason I asked Kirby to let me post. I think this blog has the tightest and smartest group of readers (assuming the commenters represent the general makeup of the readers) of all the blogs I frequent. If the response here is encouraging, I will expand my search to YTTH and some other blogs, eventually looking to fill out the ranks on the forums.

So, drop a comment here if you have any interest in Necromunda at all, or if you have any ideas on how to make an online/Vassal Necro league work.

Are we talking about the same reader base here GWvsJohn? lol

Chumbalaya said...

Yeah, TKE is nuts.

I'd be down for Necro-ing it up, but I have absolutely 0 experience with it or Vassal XD

The comments here are a much higher quality than anywhere else. Not only that, they usually constructive and conversational. I've been really impressed with your crew. It's like the best of the Ynquisitors come here and the dumbasses are afraid of pink.

Chumb, the Necro rules are free on GW site. Email me and we can talk about setting you up and finding a time for me to teach you the ropes.

I'd be interested, if I could just got vassal to gorram work. The program seems to hate me.

I'd certinly be intrested, although I haven't played Necromunda, I have been intrested in it for awhile.

Haha I'd be interested. When I was younger and just getting into WH40k my older bro and his friends dabbled in Necromunda. I'll have to DL the rules and such but it could prove interesting. Plus I've always liked the idea of small squad going through merry adventures and leveling up and such over time. Makes for more interesting game play

Hari-Kiri Rock! I need Scissors! 61!

Ah, who am I kidding? I've never played, but I used to enviously read the WD articles on it. If I can get myself another Vassal Module, and get around to the rules, I'm in. I'll be Van Saars, I reckon...

anyone who is having trouble getting Vassal to work, shoot me an email and we can figure it out.

The response here looks good. Anyone who has a blog, feel free to direct your readers to my post or my email, and ask your RL friends to get online too. I'm getting excited :)

I'm thinkin I may be the 5-0 in this...someone's gotta be the cops and I figure I can write up some cool fun fluff of an elite SWAT style team....

Don't the Arbites have rules already? I kinda assumed they would.

I will certainly promote it. :)

Unknown said...

Why are people afraid of pink? :P

Anonymous said...

Yeah TKE they do, but hey if we're going to do Necro, may as well go all nerd out and write some small personalized background fluff for my particular band o Arbites :-)

Fair point indeed.

Dude! I would love to play, if my whacked-out schedule allows it. Heck, I'll be getting a laptop with a new, improved and greater than 20 minute battery span in the near to immediate future, so I'd even be able to be psuedo-flexible given the freakishness that is you people with timezones that are, like, close to GMT/the upside down time zones that aussies use (everything in australia is upside down, right? All I know about Oz I learned from some chick in Adelaide, so there are gaps in my knowledge).

Pudding Earl said...

Is this still be worked on? Cause this is VERY relevant to my interests. Although, does someone know where you can get a necromunda vassal module? I've been looking all over and can't find anything.

Unknown said...

As far as I know, yes. GWvsJohn is AWOL currently at his graduation I think but there are plently of others who are on Vassal playing *cough Curly cough*

Chumbalaya said...

Yeah, I'm always game to get kicked around on vassal.

We just use the 40k module with some creative counts as and terrain rules.

Anonymous said...

I'm frequently Vassal Necro-ing too.... shout me out!

Chumbalaya said...

There's this other guy who plays on Vassal. He's ugly, smells bad, and plays footdar (can't even win with that broken list, lol noob). I forget his name, something like Buddha Loading. I don't get his name, it's dumb. Like him.

Anonymous said...

Yeah... he's such a tool!

I recently discovered this and found out how close Kirby is to me in rl (so getting the non-comp hard games going when we get time!) and I am quite impressed by the relaxed nature of the blog. It is a sweet and calming change of pace from YTTH as well as the crap on wargamerau and elsewhere one needs to put up with.

Vassal...how does it all work? Does it cost anything? System requirements et al? I'd love to be playing with it against any of you chaps and lassies.

As to Necromunda, I played a few games ages ago, nothing too serious but printed out the rulebook and always wanted to run a Goliath Warband with 2 Heavies with Autocannons. And Bulging Biceps I think it is, the one allowing them to move and fire with the Heavy Weapon. Just because that's epic. :D

Anonymous said...

Vassal is just 2d 40k really. It can lead to some arguments, but overall there don't seem to be any problems if terrain is discussed and labelled properly.
It takes a little while to get up and running, but there are a lot of us rocking the forum so just grab one of us. The best part is we all get to watch Chumby lose all of the time. :p
I don't know specs, but I'm pretty certain the system requirements are miniscule. There are PC, Mac and Linux versions that can be downloaded from the site. You then just need to find the 40k module which isn't too difficult.
Go with Goliath... but getting two Autocannons (they're expensive) will be tough and keeping them alive long enough to get biceps will be tougher!

Chumbalaya said...

I don't think you can effectively afford 2 autocannons to start. Stubbers work just fine though.

I do lose a lot.

Pudding Earl said...

Awesome, I was worried this would be a dead project. Can anyone give me a rough idea on timezones people operate in? I'm on pretty much all day, but don't want to idle on vassal all day waiting for someone to show up.

Chumbalaya said...

Well, I'm Eastern Standard. Usually either in the morning or at night.

Pudding Earl said...

Oh cool, same as me : D Is everyone else in roughly the same time? Or do we have others elsewhere?

Unknown said...

Taak you make us sound like lovers! *wink* lol. There aren't any really major requirements, if you can't get it running email me or GWvsJohn. As Loring said, it's mainly about being open to interpretation and talking beforehand, one of the reasons I play with people I "know."

Most people operate in Australia (GMT+10 generally), England (GMT +1?) and somewhere in the US. So basically, it's dead @ Australian nighttime (go us) but otherwise there's someone online doing something. Make sure you join the google group though with GWvsJohn AWOL atm, might be awhile before you get access Pudding.

Pudding Earl said...

Yeah, I put in an application for the group, I'm going to assume it includes everything I'll need to know about how this runs? Like when you get experience, when you can work territories etc.

Chumbalaya said...

We usually do all that stuff right after games end, keeping everything easy.

Anonymous said...

Yeah... we're currently in "Summer Time" so we're GMT +1.

I'm around all times of day.... silly early (aka now) and silly late (similar to now, but without sleep).

@pudding... if you want to get a gang sorted and have see how it works, the important stuff is downloadable from GW. Have a quick read and grab one of us.

It doesn't really 'run' per say... it's just somewhere we can post our lists as we progress and discuss any thoughts/queries. Maybe a proper league will come of it though??

Unknown said...

i.e. whenever Kirby starts and forces it into ultra competitive mode :P

Anonymous said...

Then everybody will leave 'cus Kirby nobody likes Kirby!

We love you really you pink fluffy ball of fun!

Okay, someone shoot me an email with all the relevent links to the google group (never knew google had a groups function before) and vassal et al and I'll go from there. Contact is:

australian_ent@hotmail.com

Goliath Starting Gang:

Gang leader with knife and Stub Gun - 130 creds
2 Heavies with knife and Autocannon - 720 creds
3 Gangers with knife - 150 creds

Total = 1,000 credits

Ima Rape you all with knives and bare fists!!!

That'd be the starting Gang i'd use. Don't knock it till you play it. It may struggle with income a bit but who cares, I have TWO AUTOCANNONS TO START WITH!!!

The second list which is much more hard core and what I'd run for lulz (I'd run them till they all die or I rule supreme, none of this half arsed retire the gang crap a bunch of pussies play with that leader represents me after all!) would be this:

Gang Leader with 2xknives, Meltagun - 220 creds
2 Heavies with knife, Autocannon - 720 creds
Ganger with knife, Club - 60 creds

Total = 1,000 credits

The first one is safer but the second one is funny as, it's all about high impact weaponry and making you explode or melt (does a meltaguns str 8 confer high impact injury rolls? It doesn't have it marked in the living rulebook download I've printed out and bound from ages ago) and then there's this nutter Ganger that hides away all game and then is Mr. Stabby if anyone gets too close. Sure both lists suffer from income issues, but who really cares, I'm a Goliath Gang and they are gonna mess you up!

I'm on odd random sleep patterns it's 2am right now I am averaging waking up at 4pm each day now...kinda messed up.

Cheers all,

Auretious Taak.
