DE 2nd Wave - Sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and chains excite me

Beastmaster
It's what all you leather-wearing, S&M people were hoping for, a nice swag of new DE Models.

But STOP THE PRESS!

All the models are, you guessed it, metal.

More pics below!

Succubus
Clawed Fiend
Khymera
Razorwing Flock

So the models are basically a Succubus and the Beastmaster squad, all in metal.

What are your thoughts on this pinkies, because to be blunt, I am under whelmed.

So they expect us to build a beast horde using those expensive metal models?

Lets see here the popular beast horde build most people are running nowadays comes out to around... 100-150 dollars or so? For a squad? Whatever happened to plastic

In Australia it's like twice that!
I guess some people stop playing golf because a good club cost too much, or they find alternative.

Let's move on. Either buy the model or find alternative.

Nice models but any reason to even use a Succubus? Seems like a lackluster HQ.

As a budget combat character, she beats the alternatives. Give her an Agonizer or whatnot and she's doing a fair amount of damage for cheap while still having some survivability in a fight- compare to a Haemonculous (who is never really very good in a fight) or an Archon (who needs expensive upgrades to work well) and she has a niche of her own.
I enjoy putting together large, multi-part metal models; mostly because it's satisfying when you actually get done, partly because I hate myself, and just slightly because they hurt more when thrown (and won't break if properly pinned!). Cost is why God gave us ebay.
I was going to get at least one squad of these so I could playtest them and see how they ran. 5 Masters with Razorwings and a few others, really. I thought they'd make a good unit to draw fire from my Hellions (a bit).

The important part of this statement is the tense.
Very underwhelming and overpriced. I've already put together beasts using other GW stuff for much less and the succubus, while decent, can be made from a wych box easily enough.

The succubus, BTW, has a purpose: cheap HQ that's good at assault. Give her a venom blade or Agoniser, put her in a melee squad, and you're done for 70 or 85 pts. Why she doesn't have access to the Phantasm Grenade Launcher (like the Syren and Hekatrix before her) is beyond understanding, however.
I like most of the models (even if that metal skyboard looks...well, let's not discuss it), and I may buy a succubus for the express purpose of tricking out other models. But the prices on those beasts--ouch. I wasn't gonna run 'em before, and I'm definitely not even going to collect 'em now.
The Succubus looks very nice however
Not everything can be plastic, specially models without wargear options and in which everybody wil have their unique combination of models in a squad. And one is an HQ.

Still no Venom model. *sigh*

Very true. A squad package of these guys would of been great though. And not so pricey...
Looking forward to people claiming cover saves w/ their razorwing flocks on their raiders.

I think all of them look great, especially the Succubus, except the Beastmaster, who frankly looks freaking terrible. It almost looks like it was from the old DE range or something, thank god there are Hellion boxes lol.

Oh yeah, the price. I'll be using flying rippers for razorwings, old DE warp beats for khymeras, and hellions for beastmasters. Screw paying over $100 per squad.

Would it have killed them to release Venoms with this 2nd wave? Venom's are a great anti infantry unit and work great with kabalite MSU, sorta like a razor spam but reverse, where the vehicles kill infantry and the infantry kills the tanks. Having an actual model for beastmasters and beasts is cool, but no one's buying them at that price. Even in ebay it'll cost a ton.

I think plastics take longer to cast. I may be talking out of my ass though. I would imagine the Razorwing/Venom/Wracks are all on their way.
If this current release is an example of their business sense, it'd be horrifically expensive &/or hard to build. Be happy all you need is a Vyper + spikes.
The models are superbly sculpted, but the price point is too high. Sadly, I see these languishing on shelves...
It has been said that most of the DE range will be out by the end of spring/summer IIRC (cant remember the month and don't want to look it up). I think this will either be the first of a staggered release schedule (with GW probably announcing everything else week after next) or GW is trying to keep people interested in the DE over a longer period of time to keep sales up. With all the WHFB releases lately its probably GW keeping interest while the rest of the DE stuff is scheduled after TK (who needed a new book almost as much as the DE did).

I think the beastmaster and to a lesser extent the Succubus are a bit of a let down, They are just to static IMHO. The beasts do look good but as metal at that cost I just don't see that many getting sold. not when you can make Khymera that look about as good with a chaos hounds box, sculpting putty, and a bit of work.
I think the head on the beastmaster looks amazing. Really gives the appropriate creepy feeling. I may consider using a Clawed Fiend as the basis of a conversion for a Gorax, much much better pose. Razorwings are unimpressive, but nice general bird models.

even at half the price a squad would cost too much to be viable, shame as I really quite like the beast models , the beastmaster is fail , and as someone pointed out just looks like an unreleased 3rd ed DE model , make much nicer ones with hellions and spare agonisers etc.

the succubus is fething lovely and even If I shall never use one due to the copious amount of meh she provides for relatively few points I shall be getting one just to paint.

Overall im not sure what to make of wave 2.5? would rather of just had the venom ....
Fucking metal. It'll fail to sell because of the heinous price issues, and then they'll decide to give DE less support because shit doesn't sell. Damn.
If you're decent with greenstuff you could probably make gargoyles into razorwings and just do 1/base to drop the price even further
Well those razorwings provide three choosers of the slain in one purchase.

The Succabus is nice, if I played DE I might field her as an Archon.
I think the birds will get used as Choosers of the Slain.

They all look good, except for the beastmaster. He is more of a Gorkamorka Digger than a Deldar, imo.

Shame about the price....

Rat-ogres are plastic right? That is the fiend
Orc boars for the kymera

:)
Personally? There's no way I would buy the Beastmaster model. Price is a bit high (but that's hobbies for you), but a metal model balanced on a flight stand? I don't think so, Tim.

Khymerae and Razorwings both look good, though. Will have to see them in person to say for certain, but I might use them mixed in with kitbashes and 3rd party stuff to have a really diverse-looking "circus."

Succubus is fine, no surprise there. She's an HQ, most everyone gets them in metal.

I'm betting that these will actually sell reasonably well- most people, given the option, will use GW's standard models out of habit, if nothing else. Lots of folks bitched about the Venomthrope and Hive Guard when they came out, too, but both of those are doing reasonably well.

Yeah, the beastmaster is fail. Looks like a Californian bodybuilder-wannabe kissing a facehugger. And metal model on a small flight stand? Single pose for a 1-5 choice? You get a box of hellions for the price of less than two masters and converting them is a piece of cake with all those CC-weapons from the various DE plastic sprues. Try again GW!

Khymerae are good but only two poses and single model blister is a bit rich for a "1-25" choice. The Razorwings look fine but lack the DE/warpbeast feeling (look more like wood elves creatures to me). Guess most buyers will use them for "count as" choosers of slain. Or they split down the blister to create two bases for the price of one.

Clawed fiend is okay..looks a bit like a disney yeti trying to look evil wearing a halloween mask, but most people will only run 1-2 per squad so the single pose won't hurt you that much.

Right now I think the succubus (yeah yeah, I know..but succubi is plural--stupid GW^^) will be the only thing I will buy from that wave in the near future. Nice model, the glaive will look good on my "yriel archon" conversion and being interchangeable with both the archon and wyches weapon option makes her a nice alternate hekatrix model.

If I ever go for a beastmaster squad I will get a box hellions for the masters, a box of WHF chaos hounds glued on 40mm bases for the Khymeare. Maybe one original claw fiend, not sure on the Razorwings. They justd on't fit my idea of a vicious flock of warped birds.

So yeah, I'm a bit pissed... not the models themselves but the pricing is just bad and in total contrast to the very aggressive pricing of the first rounds of DE models. Heck, if you intend run two large squads with a lot of Khymereas you nearly dish out enough money to buy a whole wave 1 DE army.
Sure, these models are expensive. But DE players should still be happy to get a set of brand new metals when IG players are longing for new Sanctioned Psykers and Rough Riders.

At these prices, guard won't be able to afford any of those things.
Nice models there, forgeworld. I see your prices haven't changed.
Oh, wait - they're GW models?

Daaaamn.

that beastmaster is fugly but i like the beasts a lot
Is it only me, or do you agree that the clawed fiend looks somewhat like James P. „Sulley“ Sullivan (Monsters Inc.)?
I prefered the old style clawed fiend from the 3rd edition rulebook, personally.

Re: razorwings as chooser of the slain - I like my vultures from the screaming skull catapult for that purpose, myself :)
i realy like the sucubus ill probly get me one of those the beastmaster not so much
