Email in: 2k Baron 'Death Scream' Army List help

"Hey Kirby

I've been reading your blog for some time and I am currently enjoying your Dark Eldar review articles. To the point where it has finally tempted me to make a damn army out of them.

So, putting pen to paper I have come up with the following 2k army (actually 1948 with no idea what to spend last points on). I envision this army being the Dark Eldar equivalent of a Speed Freaks army with Hellions as the main troop choice in the army and everything mounted screaming hell for leather to get to grips with the enemy.

We'll finish those reviews soon!

Anyway, enough rambling. The list:

Baron

3x True Born w/ 3 Blasters + Venom w/ Spliner Cannons and Retrofire engines
3x True Born w/ 3 Blasters + Venom w/ Spliner Cannons and Retrofire engines
3x True Born w/ 3 Blasters + Venom w/ Spliner Cannons and Retrofire engines

5 Warriors w/ Blaster, Sybarite w/Blast pistol + Veom w/ Splinter Cannons and Retrofire Engines
5 Warriors w/ Blaster, Sybarite w/Blast pistol + Veom w/ Splinter Cannons and Retrofire Engines
12 Hellions w/ Helliarch w/Power Weapon (Baron would ride with this group)
5 Hellions
5 Hellions

6 Reavers w/ 2 Heatlance
6 Reavers w/ 2 Blasters

2 Ravagers w/ Nightshield
Razerwing Jetfighter w/Splinter Cannons and Night Shield

1948 points
32 troops
16 Vehicles

I like it overall but the main issue is the retrofire jets. Reserving Dark Eldar is a great way to reduce the damage they take (particularly their fragile armor) and deep-striking is a nice way to move across the board. Problem with retrofire jets is you cannot jump out and shoot and you can't shoot with the occupants as you move at cruising speed. Whilst the vehicles can still shoot, you're limiting your firepower when you really shouldn't. The Duke is an easy fix to this so we might try to include him in the list.

I feel this list gives a me a lot of choice through being able to deep strike a lot of stuff (thanks to retrofire engines) and also control the board thanks to everything being mounted/faster than sin. I know most of your list advocated taking 3 Ravagers but I feel as I have enough lances and blasters throughout everything, a nice crowd control unit like the Razerwing would be in order. I know that if parts of this army were to get bogged down by hoard units, then it would be death (namely the small units of Hellions).

Any advice/recommendations for this would be grand mate

Cheers,
Sean"

Again, retrofire jets = meh on the transports. On Ravagers or transports you expect to be empty (i.e. Webway lists), then go for it as you don't need to disembark any guys. Other than that the list looks pretty strong. I'd make both of the Reavers heatlances and try to bump the numbers of the small squads to 7 or 8 for the Hellions which you have the points for. Dropping the retrofire jets also gives you another 25 points spare to potentially upgrade those squads. I'd also look to get flickerfield on the Razorwing as it won't often be able to generate cover with its size.

If you still want to be able to deep-strike your stuff I'd recommend the Duke but you'd probably have to downgrade the Razorwing to a Ravager, drop the Sybarites on the Warriors and obviously all of the retrofire jets and you'd have the issue of the small Hellion squads. Rather I think sticking with just the Baron and using reserve denial + the Baron's +1 roll to go first to minimise the damage your army takes and/or put retrofires on the Heavy Support.
