Email in: Ard Boyz 2500pt list (the Kirby edition)

Dakka

"Hey Kirby,

So you helped me out a while back when I first started Grey Knights, and you were a huge help. I went from barely being able to draw a game to being a contender (though not generally steamrolling anyone). Ard Boyz is coming up on 8/13, and I'd love for you to critique my list and let me know how I might improve again.

As you can see it's a pretty basic list, the dreads hold the backfield, the strike squads do their 24" thing, and the Grandmaster either gives some of the dreadnoughts/dreadknights scoring, or makes stuff scout to get them to the action faster. I'm not entirely sold on the dreadknights, though I think for 140pts a piece they're a steal and will soak up a lot of firepower, plus they're the only thing I have that can insta-kill T5 stuff. I played it against a Death Guard list and it did really well, especially the Vindicare and Dreadnoughts.

My only thoughts were to replace the 5 man strike squad with 2 jokaeros and 3 crusaders for some long-range punch, or to replace one Ven Dread with a techmarine with conversion beamer for more long range love and the ability to repair a random weapon destroyed or immobilized result, if needed. I'm not sure how close this list comes to a "net list" (I hope not), but I'm thinking it can be pretty competetive. Thanks in advance!!

2500"

Solid but a few things I don't like. Dreadknights and the Vindicare. At 2500 points both are really easy to drop and with everything else having Fortitude they will drop quickly and early. I think the Vindicare is usable if you have a ride for him to hide in (i.e. Rhino) or a Techmarine to give him a 2+ cover save. Since you have a Grand Master the first is viable so I'd turn one of your Psybacks into a Rhino and he can hide in there. You lose a turn of shooting but become very durable. The firepower is still there to drop him at range but it's a lot harder to do. The Dreadknights though, well everything Ap2 goes into them and it's not hard to drop four T6/5++ wounds. As boring as it sounds I'd prefer these to be more Psyfledreads.

With that in mind let's then turn the large GKSS squads to something else. A nice foot squad for the Grandmaster to go in would be great and Paladins or Grey Knight Terminators are the obvious choice. Paladins would really open up target priority for your opponent but I'd only take them if you dropped Coteaz for a Libby. You could do this since you are only using Coteaz for utility rather than FoC swapping so it's up to you. If not then go for a full GKT squad with double psycannon, psybolts, brotherhood banner, couple hammers and lots of halberds.

This gives you a great midfield unit which can hold your characters, is good in assault and shooting and isn't easy to drop for any army. I'd drop any spare points into another small GKSS + Psyback squad. If you're strapped for points I'd look to drop Coteaz or the Vindicare. They both add to the army but are less necessary. Dropping the Vinidcare also means you don't have to worry about that single Rhino and have another slot for a Dreadnought.

Oh and remember, your whole army can instant death T5 with Force Weapons.
