Email in: Mech BA - Thoughts?

B&C

"Hey Kirbs,

You might recall a few weeks ago I emailed you regarding a DoA list. Anyways, during a moment of clarity (or stupidity you choose) I decided to magnetize my jump packs /w regular backpacks so I could use em as either jump marines or reg. assault marines. I'd like to put a Mech BA list together to change things up a bit. What are your thoughts on these (2 Versions)?

1750 - Version 1
Libby - Fear of the Dark, Sanguine Shield -- 100 (Joins HG)
Honor Guard - Quad Meltas, Rhino -- 205

Sang. Priest -- 50 (Joins a Razor)

Sniper Scouts - Camo Cloaks -- 90
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165

Baal Pred - Sponson Heavy Bolters -- 145
Baal Pred - Sponson Heavy Bolters -- 145
Speeder - Heavy Flamer, Multimelta -- 70

Rifleman -- 120

1750 - Version 2
Libby - Fear of the Dark, Sanguine Shield -- 100 (Joins HG)
Honor Guard - Quad Meltas, Rhino -- 205

Sang. Priest -- 50 (Joins a Razor)

Sniper Scouts - Camo Cloaks, Missile Launcher -- 100
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun, Lasplas Back -- 165

Baal Pred - Sponson Heavy Bolters -- 145
Baal Pred - Sponson Heavy Bolters -- 145
Baal Pred - Sponson Heavy Bolters -- 145

(1715/1750 - 35 POINTS FREE TO PLAY WITH STILL)

Also, to increase up to 2000 I was considering fitting in 2 Furioso Dreads /w talons and heavy flamers to run behind the razorbacks. Threaten anything that decides to engage the razors. Thoughts on this?

Thanks again,

Ryan"

I think you are grossly underusing the Heavy Support section which has some very good choices for Blood Angels. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the Honor Guard. It's a huge target since it has four meltaguns and it will be highly unlikely to ever reach your opponent's lines. It just has too much firepower over the other squads to be ignored. That frees up 205 points for both lists and I think your best bet here is grabbing some Devastators to go with the Scouts and a babysitting Priest. Easiest change here is for List 2 where you drop a Baal Pred (so you've got two infantry eating machines) giving you 350 for Devastators + Priest. Two squads of Devastators with four missiles + the Priest is 310 so you have 40 points to do with as you will for the rest of your army (infernous pistols, power weapons, etc. on the ASM or HKM on four of the tanks).

This then gives you nine missiles from backfield with a scoring element and FNP. Five LasPlas RBacks running around poking the enemy with AP2 firepower with the ASM inside to mass assault/melta things as necessary and the two Baals to provide extra firepower where needed. To move this to 2000 points I'd be looking for another Devastator squad + Baal or perhaps two Sternguards in Rhinos with a bunch of combi-meltas to help the ASM in midfield.

Similar to what Kirby said - I would go with:

Libby - Shield - Rage - 100
Priest - 50
5 Assault Marines - Meltagun - Razorback - Las/Plas - x5 = 825
Predator - Lascannon Sponsons - 135 x3 = 405

That being the core make up of your list = 1380

Leaving you with 370pts to play with:

More dakka = 2 Baal Preds with Heavy Bolters and a Landspeeder Tornado = 380
Combat - 3 Furioso Dreadnoughts with 2 Blood Talons - 375
or you can add Mephiston and a Furioso Dread for 375 as well.

Lots of options to play!
How do see you army operating on the table? (or how do you want to play?) In my opinion that should be the first question to address before deciding what units to include in your army.

I noticed that dropping the Honor Guard + 35 points from your second list nets you 2 Rifleman dreads. Could also be an option if you do not want to go for the Devastators. It would give some more saturation, but is easier to stunlock.
Librarian with shield and sanguine sword
2x Furioso Dread with bloodtalons
2x 5 assault marines in a las/plas razer
1x 5 assault marines in a landraider crusader(joined by the lib)
2x Vindicator
3x Baal Predator with HB sponsons.

should be around 1750.
In BA, by taking las plas backs you effectively slow your tanks down by 6" every turn which is considerable since you are packing them full of melta guns. You should consider the merits of TL assault cannons or TL las as an alternative that opens up a lot of tactics and side arc shots.

Compared to any other chapter, though, you get to move and fire both weapons, so you have double the firepower on the move, in the same manner as an AC/LC predator. You still have the option of moving 12" and firing, as a twin-linked plasmagun is still nasty.
I disagree that they're slowed by las/plas you just have to be disciplined enough not to get drawn into firing too much.
All great comments, and a BIG thanks to you too Kirby. I have lots to think about.

@Kirby I'm liking your suggestions with the 2nd list. I'll need to go fiddle with it a bit.
@ DeF10 Yeah I see your point, I do like the idea of going 6" though and firing off 3 shots. Also, it adds a bit of redundancy when a weapon gets blown off :P

Do you guys/gals advocate priests up in the razorbacks or just for the heavy support?
People not big fans of Vindicators? I've never played with or against them much to say myself.

They really get beaten with the price increase for being fast (they're 30 points more than the bluebook variety). They also compete with AC/LC preds, and when your guys are up close in combat, you don't want the blast scattering onto your guys. It also suffers from "one gun syndrome". If think a better tank for clearing out packed-in infantry is a Baal with a flamestrom cannon, as you don't have to worry about it scattering and you ignore cover. You can also buy HB sponsons so if it loses its turret, it's not useless.
If you want a little backfield presence, ala Devastators, I might suggest taking some Tacticals, 2 or so squads. Combat squad them, and have the half with the sergeant and flamer go in the rhino, and half the half with the multi-melta/missile sit on an ojective with a devastator squad and a priest. They don't get the 35-point discount on a vehicle, but they are 2 points cheaper per guy, so it's not THAT huge of a disparity. Additionally, the bolters and flamers give you anti-infantry to balance the anti-tank you're getting from the Las/Plas.

Sorry, I meant Razorback for their transport.
