Email in: list review

"Hey there Kirby, Kildash here. I've been reading up on your blog lately, and though i don't agree with everything, you bring out some very interesting ideas, so you're doing a pretty good job here. Well done for that. However, I was curious of your opinion on a tyranid list of mine:

HQ:
Tyranid Prime with 2x boneswords, scything talons and Toxin Sacs
Tyranid Prime with 2x boneswords, scything talons and Toxin Sacs

Elites:
2x Hive Guard
2x Hive Guard
2x Hive Guard

Troops:
4 Tyranid Warriors with Lash Whips & Boneswords, Scything Talons and Toxin Sacs
4 Tyranid Warriors with Lash Whips & Boneswords, Scything Talons and Toxin Sacs
10 Termagants
10 Termagants
Tervigon with Catalyst, Cluster Spines, Toxin Sacs and Adrenal Glands
Tervigon with Catalyst, Cluster Spines, Toxin Sacs and Adrenal Glands

Heavy Support:
Trygon with Adrenal Glands
Trygon
Trygon

Total: 2000

It's a pretty standard list, i know, but I'm wondering what specific thoughts you have. Thanks in advance!

You don’t agree with some things? Out, out OUT! This blog doesn’t broker disagreement... ^^. Thanks though for the joy. Removed point values from email btw Kildash. List-wise, it’s fine. I’d scrape the points together for Adrenals on the other 2 Trygons though. S7 makes a big difference against AV14 and T5+. A suggestion here would be dropping the Tyranid Warriors to 2x Boneswords each (saving 5pts per model for 40) and upping the Primes to LW & BS (using 10pts). This saves us 30 pts so we can add on 2 Adrenal Glands to the Trygons and then 10 pts to spare (2 termagants perhaps?). Only problem with this is it forces the Primes to really stay with the Warriors and minimises the Lash Whip coverage, though with proper movement you should be able to get the important models covered to I1.

Otherwise you could just drop the Toxin sacs off the Primes and replace them with Adrenals on the Trygons. You minimise the killing power somewhat of the Primes but with S5 backed up by Warriors, that shouldn’t be too big of a problem and this also allows the Warriors to operate solo if you wish the Primes to babysit the Hive Guard for Wound allocation and synapse coverage.

I'd disagree with Kirb about the Warrior/Prime equips. Warriors need Whip because it lets them strike before Marines; Primes, which it's pretty nice for them, do not. If anything, I would drop the Adrenal on the Tervigons for Trygon Adrenal- you already have a strong melee force, so it's less likely to be relevant that your Gants are only mediocre in a fight. Even that, though, I'm not sure I'd go with. Trygon Adrenals are nice if you have the points, but not a major thing. If you see a lot of Dreadnoughts, though, I'd spring for them.

Anti-tank feels a little bit low with only six Guard and no other sources, but I think you could get away with it in a lot of places.

@Puppy; fair point. I'd go with the second option listed then and drop the TSacs on Primes for Adrenal on Trygons. I think having Trygons charge @ S7/I5 is very important in bashing anything on I4 and dragging down tanks (moving or not).

Whilst the list lacks a bit in suppression fire I think 3 Trygons can make up for it with their re-rolls in combat and ability to fleet/DS well though finding the points for VCs on the Warriors might not go amiss.

Yeah, 6 HG seems kinda slim. With Trygons up in your grill from the get go, Warriors don't see much use beyond mop up. Swapping a unit out for a pair of Harpies nets you more suppression while keeping your big doom unit around.

The Warriors do provide a backup plan against stuff like Wraithlords (which are a pain) and masses of dudes who can otherwise overwhelm a Trygon. They also give the army a few more wounds/scoring units than it would otherwise have, and enhance the "hey I hope you have a ton of high-str guns" feel of things. I haven't tried this particular setup enough to say, but he is at least pushing target saturation pretty well here.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies and comments. I don't think it'd be wise to drop toxin sacs on the prime... they just turn him into a killing machine ^^

However, i agree i should find room for the adrenals on the trygons. Maybe dropping the adrenals on the tervigons? Or the toxin sacs? I have a feeling toxins are more useful for gaunts than adrenals, so i might drop the adrenals there.

Quite a small change, but still:

I'm always hesitant to not have adrenal/toxin on Tervigons simply because of the massive bonus they can give out and again would lean towards taking Toxin off the Primes. whilst you don't get the re-rolls wounding most things on a 3+ is still handy & you're being backed up by 4 Warriors who do.
