Event Horizon - Another W/L Event in Sydney, Ozlandus

Hi Guys!

Kirby mentioned here about Event Horizon, but Denis aka Loriness who is hosting this event is madly churning out content, FAQ's and other information on his blog, http://kc40k.blogspot.com/.

For those interested in a brief overview of the missions, here goes!
(This is not a full evalutative review, just a quickie).

1850 Points. Centurion is 1750, but will be moving to this points level next time around.

The event is in Hornsby, in May 2011.

Tickets are $50.00 pre-purchased, or $55 on the day

The missions are as below:

Game 1
• DEPLOYMENT: Pitch Battle (Rulebook P.93)
• Primary: Capture the Flag (Objectives)
• Secondary: Tagged Targets  (Kill Points, margin of 4+)
• Tertiary: Hold Territory (Table Quarters)

Game 2
• DEPLOYMENT: Spearhead (Rulebook P.93)
• Primary: Hold Territory (Table Quarters)
• Secondary: Capture the Flag (Objectives)
• Tertiary: Tagged Targets  (Kill Points, margin of 4+)

Game 3
• DEPLOYMENT: Dawn of War (Rulebook P.93)
• Primary: Tagged Targets  (Kill Points, margin of 4+)
• Secondary: Hold Territory (Table Quarters)
• Tertiary: Capture the Flag (Objectives)

Game 4
• DEPLOYMENT: Spearhead (Rulebook P.93)
• Primary: Capture the Flag (Objectives)
• Secondary: Hold Territory (Table Quarters)
• Tertiary: Tagged Targets  (Kill Points, margin of 4+)

Game 5
• DEPLOYMENT: Pitch Battle (Rulebook P.93)
• Primary: Hold Territory (Table Quarters)
• Secondary: Tagged Targets  (Kill Points, margin of 4+)
• Tertiary: Capture the Flag (Objectives)

Game 6 (to determine Knight Champion if required)
• DEPLOYMENT: Dawn of War (Rulebook P.93)
• Primary: Tagged Targets  (Kill Points, margin of 4+)
• Secondary: Capture the Flag (Objectives)
• Tertiary: Hold Territory (Table Quarters)

The only issue I personally have with the missions, is that the KP mission is "table or tie", by which I mean that a 4 KP gap is pretty big for most armies. As such, expect to see this mission objective "tied" a lot, and when it's not tied, expect it to have been a very one-sided fight.

Saying that, it's still better than a comp event!

(As a side note, Loriness is further along with his prep than I am, so I commend him on his enthusiasm, and will be quietly stealing some of his ideas... )

Your analysis of KP is correct. I have recently adjust it to 3kp to win, but might even go down to 2kp to win.
I have seen "2 KP to win" results in 20% draw. I think the sweet point is either 2 or 3 to win, but will need some more test games to confirm.

I think 2 is a nice number. In a standard KP mission a difference of 1 shouldn't be a win/loss IMO.
I'll be honest - I can't agree. Some armies aren't about killing, and their playstyle is punished by the margin.

Yes, they may have a theory advantage in the other objectives, but these Codii also tend to be older ones, too. The increased cost and underpowerednessness (TM) of their stuff hurts them enough, IMO.
Agree with TKE here. Eldar for example dislike this concept greatly as well as older armies which aren't so competitive such as Necrons/Chaos/DH/etc.

I'm a firm believer in the pick and choose KP system but if you do the margin of victory, agree at least with a 2 margin of victory.
2 margin of victory seems reasonable for KP. It just minimizes the luck. Situations where both players have 3 KP going into the last turn, they both shoot vehicles, and one loses a weapon and is stunned while the other blows up is not exactly 'stunning skill difference.'

I'd also suggest that it count towards the secondary. So if it's 4-3 KP, then your opponent has to be at least 3-1 in Objectives to win (2-1 gets counterbalanced by the KP difference, 1-1 is a victory for the person who got the KP). That makes it feel a little less arbitrary - if someone loses with more KP than his opponent, he has to be significantly behind in everything else.
In a no comp event, if you're taking one of those armies then you're doing something wrong. End of story.

No comp should be a case of taking your absolute best. If you're trying to water this down, then go back to the system that handles these armies and that is comped events.
Who cares if it's no comp and you want to take Necrons? You shouldn't as it's said persons choice (maybe that's all they have, they want a challenge or really do think it's good) and missions which disadvantage any army (whether it's good or bad) isn't a step towards balance. I get what Loriness is trying to do in keeping with the KP system the BRB sets out but think the margin needs to be smaller.
Why not 2k limits?

I imagine it's primarily for time constraints.

Yeah, *finally* registered for a profile!
About time, you lazy brit =P
both time and market.
2.5hr for 2k game is rare in Aus, we just don't play as quick.
As for Market, Most players do not have 2k of competitive army.
Finally, as we get to 2k+, some army with alpha strike becomes too powerful as it blows most off the board in the first turn. (my opinion, yet to be varify)
2k is actually faster than the lower levels, thanks to all the guns.
Shitty armies are still shit below 2k, but poof faster once people are allowed to bring what they 'want,' rather than what they 'need.'

Well, if people can't scrounge 2k, that kinda makes 2k impossible.

Dan - biggest compliment on 3++ I think I can pay is that I thought this was by Kirby.

Ooops. I wish that:
a) it didn't ghostwrite the last comment it remembers;
b) I could retract comments.

Please delete.
Make an account and you can :P.
No, can't delete stuff from before account. :'( Technically, not me.
