Email in: Ard Grey Hunter List

Tabletop Geeks
"I am looking at running the following list for Ard Boyz, and wanting to get a little critical review

I don't think I need to explain my tactical mindset, as this list is designed to be flexible and hurtful... and oddly, win via high quality quantity.

I think 93 space wolves, all at 4/4/4/4 stat line or better, giving me endless deployment/reserve variations, makes for some frustrated opponents... but if I'm too spammy or needing more tricks for my pony, I'm all hears.

I'm all for Foot Space Wolves and think they do very well but simply dropping lots of Grey Hunters in Drop Pods doesn't cut it. There are assault armies which will tear through this (see mass Jumper Blood Angels or GKT Grey Knights) and there's not much you can do about it. So here's what I'd recommend.

Forget about Bjorn. He's over-costed and doesn't really add much. Extra reliable in choosing who goes first but your army doesn't care too much about losing that roll. Get a rune priest. 4+ against all psychic powers is really nice and going to help a lot. Get rid of the Pods and get on foot (or go a full mech army but I feel this army is easier to translate to a foot list). Podding armies are done best when you don't have to come on in T1 (Black Templars) or can mix a lot of Dreads + Marines into lots of Pods (Blood Angels, Vanilla Marines). Lose the couple of LasPlas Razorbacks and Rhino and expand those Long Fangs to six guys (3x ML, 2x LC? or 5x ML). You need all the bodies possible in those squads.

Forget about Wolf Scouts. Whilst they are great, stupid 'Ard Boyz rules are going to make them blah so let's take two squads of Wolf Guard. One squad is going to have a guy for each of the Long Fang packs and each of the Grey Hunter packs. For the Long Fangs I'd run them naked (though one with a CML is a good idea) and for the Grey Hunters give them a PFist and combi-melta. Expand the Grey Hunters to 10 strong each with double melta, Mark of the Wulfen, Standard and Power Weapon as well. The next Wolf Guard squad should be around 6-7 strong and a mix of terminator armor and power armor with lots of Storm Bolters, a CML and some combat weapons. The Wolf Guard Battle Leader goes here and takes the Stealth Saga. You now have an annoying unit that has 3+ cover, 2+ armor and lots of shots.

The rest of your points now go into Thunderwolf Cavarly as this is what makes foot Wolves work. If you need points (you should have some from all the Pods you've dropped) the WGBL + squad isn't really needed so drop them. You want as many TWC in three different squads as you can possibly fit. This gives your Grey Hunters some excellent combat back-up and gives the TWC a lot of bodies to protect them. You've got the LF to provide fire support and enough meltaguns in the Grey Hunters and rending attacks from the Thunderwolves to give mech armies pause and so many attacks in combat, even 2+/FNP units will drop. It's a deviation from your Pod list but I really don't think SW Pods work and it does keep your army list relatively similar in terms of lots of GH + Long Fangs.
