E-mail in: Necrons for Christmas

ay.sea

"Hey there, Kirby! I was actually hoping to aim this towards Zjoekov, given his love of list-crafting, but I couldn't find his address, so I'll go for just-as-good! I've been working to get my first real-world list together, but I'd like some outside help with planning it. These are the models that I will have on the other side of Christmas:

2 Barges
1 Ark
1 Scythe
6 Scarabs
24 Warriors
10 Immortals/Deathmarks/Crypteks
5 Shield-And-Sword Lychguard (These are coming from someone important to me, so I'd really like to use them!)
2 Lords from the Barges

Is there a viable 1000 or 1500 point list in this? If there is, could you show it to me?

(Also, do Trollbloods already!)

- Sven"

Hey Sven!

Kirby was so nice to send your e-mail through to me, so you still get the reply from me ;)

I'll simply try to use all the models you'll be getting/want and make something viable out of it. People sometimes focus so much on making optimised lists, that they lose track of reality: Less optimised lists are just fine for casual play as long as you include enough enough tools. I usually do a very easy and quick check-up for this: Is there a decent amount of lasting AT and AI in it? (so can you shut down vehicles and infantry throughout all the game) Can you take objectives both in your own deployement zone and further on the field? (so is your scoring potential stable?) If one can answer yes to both questions then the list is simply playable!

Let's start with the Lychguard, as you want them in. Sword and Shields means you can use them in a forward footslogging role, providing cover to infantry and acting as a counterassault. They are decently hard to remove and an Orb will make them even harder to remove, providing you have at least 1 model left at the end of a phase. (so you can make your RP rolls) They can't hurt vehicles with their S5 powerswords, so a Warscythe would be nice too. Seeing as you got 2 Overlords with a Warscythe (and optional Orb) from the Barges: We'll add an Overlord to the this unit.

Overlord; Warscythe + Orb 130
5 Lychguard; Sword + Shields 225

This unit can act as cover and counterassault for 1 or more large infantry units. As you'll have at least 20 Warriors and 10 Immortals, I think we'll go with a setup of a large Warrior block marging forward, while 2x5 Immortals are the backfield troops which provide fire support. We'll take a Ghost Ark to regenerate Warriors and for some extra gauss weaponry, while the Ark can also give cover to the Annihilation Barges, which we'll take as fire support. A lone Scarab unit is never really bad, as they can be hidden easily or at least been given cover. The large Warrior unit will benefit from a Phaeron Overlord, to make them relentless. An Orb isn't really needed when you have 20 Warriors and a Ghost Ark to regenerate some, but it's an option when there are points left. Let's take 2 Solar Pulse Crypteks to join both Immortal units. All in all we're at this:

Overlord; Warscythe + Phaeron 120
2 Crypteks; Solar Pulse 110
20 Warriors 260
Ghost Ark 115
5 Immortals 85
5 Immortals 85
6 Scarabs 90
Annihilation Barge 90
Annihilation Barge 90

We're at 1400 points currently. I think you should be able to make another 2 Crypteks from the leftover warriors and Immortal bits, so we can add a Cryptek to both the Warrior and Lychguard unit. Let's add some extra little bit of AT by taking another 2 Crytpeks with Eldritch Lances, which the Lychguard can just fire while moving up. The 30 leftover points I'd spend on buffing the Overlord who's joining the Lychguard: Sempiternal Weave to soak up more fire and Mindshackle Scarabs for extra potential CC nastyness.

Alternatively you could roll with 2x 10 Warriors each joined by a Phaeron Overlord, to be able to target 2 units at a turn with the Gauss Flayers, but this leaves the Lychguard unit very vulnerable and not nearly as scary. It's an option however.

Final list would look like this:

Overlord; Warscythe + Phaeron 120
Overlord; Warscythe, Weave, Mindscarabs, Orb 160
5 Lychguard; Sword + Shields 225
2 Crypteks; HoD, 1 Solar Pulse 90
2 Crypteks; HoD, 1 Solar Pulse 90
20 Warriors 260
Ghost Ark 115
5 Immortals 85
5 Immortals 85
6 Scarabs 90
Annihilation Barge 90
Annihilation Barge 90

Total: 1500 points

I hope this reply is of some help to you!

Cheers, Zjoekov
