Metatransition - Scarab Farm

BoLS
Necrons on the whole transferred pretty well so most of their builds can be assume to have transferred well. Let's look at how the infamous Scarab farm did.

The Scarab farm was all about taking tiny amounts of Scarabs and turning them into huge units with nine Spyders. This provided really large Scarab units which could molest even moving vehicles and leave points free for other Necron goodies. In 5th edition it had a few flaws though - Scarabs would hit vehicles, drop them to paper thin armor, destroy them and then turn around and die. Scarabs were a great unit when supported by extra firepower but by taking nine Spyders, one would often lose a key support unit in the Annihilation Barge. Imothek was also common with Farm lists which meant Necron shooting was impacted negatively as well - what are Necrons good at again?

Ally Template: Necron Flyerwing

Taleofpainters

Okay, let's try working an Ally Template/Plug-in and see what we can do with the post and if this is something the community wants continued. What we'll try to do here is look at a base concept one would want to ally into their army and why with options around that. We'll start with a pretty easy one - Necron Flyerwing.

Metatransition - Tesla spam Necrons

40k Nation

Tesla spam in 5th was about putting as much tesla on the table to simply destroy vehicles through weight of fire. The issue was Tesla weapons maxed out at S7 and had AP - and unlike Grey Knight Passback based armies, that S7 didn't have Rending. This meant dealing with higher AVs consistently could be difficult for Tesla-based Necron armies and thus Command Barges, Scarabs & Crypteks to shore this up. So how does this translate to 6th edition...

Comparison: Tesla & Gauss

Chaos Dwarfs

Because Necrons aren't getting enough attention currently, right? In 5th edition, running your Immortals with Tesla was generally the way to go but several rule changes have muddied the waters a bit. Let's take a look at both options now and whilst the obvious place this comparison takes place is on Immortals, it can be applied to the rest of the Necron army as well.

Necrons in 6th, First Impressions

Hello, internet, Chumby here to talk about Necrons!

You know Necrons, the most OP unbeatable WAAC spam fotm bandwagoner cheesy broken beardy army in the history of 40k!

Necrons were the last of the 5th edition Codices and were said to have been written with 6th in mind.  And boy, were they.  Nearly every rules change benefits the brobots and really brings them to the forefront as the army to beat for the time being.

Event Horizon Battle Report Game 5: Blood Angels vs Necrons

Semi-finals! I made it. Now to just go a bit further... Game 5 was against Rupert and his Scarabfarm who made the top 4 at 3++con, too. Mission is two objectives primary with them placed in non-deployed quarters (deployment is spearhead) and secondary is table quarters. Basically modified C&C with a secondary. Again, no KP which is good for me and once again, Mephiston is the trump card. Nothing he has can really go toe-to-toe with Mephiston for any length of time and he can easily deal with whole squads through sweeping advance or instant death so I just need to make sure he keeps on trucking. Lightning strikes are going to screw with my vehicles so stopping that ASAP should be my top priority. Unfortunately, I don't think about this. There is also a video feed for this report which I'm editing currently, will add up when it's done.

Email in: 1500pt Necron list "Farewell to 5th" tournament

"Hey,

After the great back-and-forth we had in the comments of your 'Tyranids v Necrons' article I thought I'd send you my list for an upcoming tournament.

Local meta predominantly shuns Net-lists and most net advice but I still expect to see mostly MEQ, (predominantly Grey Nights and vanilla Marines). I'll almost certainly be the only Necron player there.

It's a 1500pt game, so half what I usually play at, which made trimming damn hard. The list is designed around not spamming units (because I hate spam-lists) and having as much variety as possible.

Vinsanity's Choice of 40K and Fantasy Tournament Lists Lists!

Hey guys. So around here we have a 40k and a fantasy tourney coming up quite soon and I'm planning to go to both. I just wanted some list thoughts on these. For the 40k one, it will either be Necrons or Orks at 1850 and for the fantasy one it will either be Beastmen or Orcs & Goblins at 2500... So onto the lists. I will have comments after each one...

Email in: Tau v. Necrons

"Hey, I was just wondering if you could give me your two cents on the matchup between Tau and Necrons. It seems like the new book is lights out for Tau armies (hehe...) because they just don't have a good way to bring broadsides to bear in night fight, even with blacksun filters. Once NF runs out the scarab farm may already be too large. Am I missing something? Is it better/worse than I thought?

Thanks for your time,
 Steve"

Email in: Mix'n'Match my new Necrons!

"I've been reading your blog for almost one and a half year and greatly appreciate your articles on tactics and codex reviews, which really helped me analyzing my own play over here in Germany. I've got almost all the toys I'd want for Blood Angels. I can play them as full mech or DoA only, but the painting is... well... mostly lacking. I bought too much too fast and for now they are resting, but I will get back to this army. Now I'm going for something new, I'm building a Necron army, for I like the new rules and fluff (!) and painting a basic Necron model is easy. This army will be fully painted before it hit's the battlefield and I'd be thankful if you helped me deciding on what to take.

I don't play in competitive events and prefer games with friends. I've found optimised (optimised as in having the best chances to win games - with the current meta and a range of enemy forces that I am likely to engage on the battlefield as constraints and assuming equal player skill) to be lacking, as they force my opponents (a.k.a. friends) to field similarly strong lists to not be clubbed to death, meaning the builds converge towards an optimum and become boring. This is a simplified view, but it yields at least some truth. My way to stop the arms race is to write a list that would be competitive at some lower point level - 80 to 90 Percent of the target points level - and fill the rest with "cool stuff I'd like to see on the battlefield".

Army Comparison: Tyranids vs Necrons

synaps3

Has another codex hurt the Tyranid cause? Let's see.

Tyranid Advantages -

They're an army which likes to get close and nom you - Necrons are a short-ranged army with little nomming ability of their own. Super-gants, Genestealers, the array of MCs, Warriors/Shrikes, Ravengers, Hormgaunts, etc. are all going to do a number on your basic Necron. Even the tougher Necron units like Immortals or Lychguard are going to be wounded pretty regularly with lots of high-strength and/or poison attacks in combat. Once Tyranids get into combat the advantage is obviously theirs and they have some speedy units and the durability to get there against an army without lots of high strength/low AP weaponry.

Email in: Necron list 1500

"Hi Kirby, it's me again.

Last time I sent you a list at 1500 with 2 Overlord. You said that have 2 Overlord isn't a good idea but I really want to try this combination so I was brainstorming to a list with 2 Overlords during this week (it's holiday in France).

I know the list is pretty static, and this is why I adjoin 6 Wraith to be my defensive asset, or to hunt those GI and Tau who are in backfield. I know I can change the 6 wraith against 2 nightscythe but I'm a big fan of wraith and they have a good synergy in my list.

Necrons 2nd Wave - Advance Orders up

Advance orders are up and yes they're still missing the Scythes *sadface*. Again, the stuff looks pretty good overall but those Scythes would have sold a lot there Games Workshop, now you'll just be losing money to people making their own or someone else making kits for you. Enjoy the pictures.

Necrons 2nd Wave - No Scythes

So Necron second wave has been released, up for pre-order May 5th. No Scythes which is a big disappointment and a shame on Games Workshop's part - another TWC/Tervigon fiasco coming =D? Anywhere, Necron special characters, Wraiths, Tomb Blades, Triarch Stalkers and Spyders have all been re-done/made so you can now drool over pictures.

Some pretty nice looking sculpts at least - the Tomb Blades look particularly nice as do the new Spyders. Not a fan of the new Wraiths too much but still not too shabby :P. I'll be interested to see how big the Stalker is in relation to getting it cover - looks bigger than your standard Dreadnought! Anyway, pics below :).

Email in: Necrons @ 1850 - limited to available models

"Kirby & AbusePuppy,

I've recently taken the plunge with Necrons, after reading AbusePuppy's great Codex reviews over the last few weeks. I've started a small force, but would like to build it up to 1850 points for a local Tournament in July.

I'd really like to avoid any major conversions for this army, since I have several other armies that I've done that kind of work for and I just don't want to get into that this time. To that end, I'd like to limit it to models that are actually available from GW. No, that means no Night Scythes and no Wraiths. At least, not yet. :(

I have a very tentative list that I've been tinkering with, but I get stuck at 1726 points, and I'm kind of at a loss where to go with it. Here's what I have:

Email in: 1500pt Necron list - advice?

"Kirby,

I really enjoy reading 3++. You and your team put forth excellent analysis and reviews. As a Necron player, I found AbusePuppy's review of the codex very informative and I used his sample lists as the model for my list:

Overlord - Warscythe, Resurrection Orb, Mindshackle Scarabs, Phaeron (165)

Warriors x 15 - Cryptek w/ Lance & Solar Pulse, Ghost Ark (365)

Email in: Scarabswarm 'Crons - do they work?

Warseer

"Hiya Kirby,

I know the general internet consensus is that Night Scythes and Aniihilation Barges is "teh shit", and that people who play Scarabswarms are noobs and only win by clubbing baby seals, and thus should be ridiculed and flamed.

I've been playing Scarabswarm since the new 'Cron dex came out, and I've had some very good results with it. The latest version I have been playing with (the list below) has beaten mech SW, BA, and IG (all of them solid, top tier Codices) very consistently, and its also come out on top against Chaos, Eldar, SM, Deldar (one game admittedly, will have to playtest that matchup more).
