G'day.
Goatboy's Goat Angels! |
I am not really a gamer, but have started to read 3++ somehow and really enjoy it. We have that effect on people :) For a long time now I have planed to start a 40k Beastmen army, which I imaging like a mercenary clan (like Kroot who buy themselves equipment from other races). From my first start in this hobby I learned that it is better to have a thought out list before you start a new project, to save time and money.
Sage advice :)
Now, as for Beastmen in 40k, Goatboy has done a smack-bang job of this already. Google up his Goat Angels for inspiration.
However, there is nothing stopping us bastardising his theme a little, err, lot :)
So for my second start I eventually came up with a nice army list concept, that was something like this for 1500 points:
Captain Kayvaan Shrike
- - - > 195 points
Chaplain, Jumppack
- - - > 115 points
5 Vanguard Veterans, Jumppacks, 2 x Stormshields, 1 x Powerweapon, 1 x Powerfist, 1 x Relicblade
+ Upgrade zum Sergeant, Sturmschild, Ehrenklinge -> 55 Pkt.
- - - > 275 points
(this would be the Clans Chief with Shaman and Bodyguard with the best, they can buy)
Ironclad-Dreadnought, Heavy Flamer, 2 x Hunterkiller missiles
- - - > 160 points
Ironclad-Dreadnought, Heavy Flamer, 2 x Hunterkiller missiles
- - - > 160 points
(this some 4 legged dread conversions)
5 Scouts, CCWs & Boltpistols,
+ Sergeant, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x power weapon, melterbombs
- - - > 105 points
5 Scouts, CCWs & Boltpistols,
+ Sergeant, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x power weapon, melterbombs
- - - > 105 points
5 Scouts, Sniper rifles, rocket launcher
+ Sergeant
- - - > 85 points
5 Scouts, Shotguns, rocket launcher
+ Sergeant
- - - > 85 points
5 Scouts, Bolters , rocket launcher
+ Sergeant
- - - > 85 points
(and this the normal Beastmen warriors with armor)
Land Speeder Storm, Multimelta
- - - > 65 points
Land Speeder Storm, Multimelta
- - - > 65 points
(and 2 converted skimmers for transporting some of them)
The idea behind this was that the fleet special rule would fit very good to the more agile legs of the Beastmen, and the Ironclads would fit because they got move trough cover, like the scouts. And the Land Speeder Storms would make some fitting transports for such a fast hitting force. So it was all set until I started reading your blog, which made me realize that the list was not really thought through. Why use Storms when the scouts are able to sprint anyways. And the Ironclads seemed somehow misplaced without droppods, but at 1500 points this comes of to expansive and somehow i don't like drop pods for this army, doesn't fit the idea for the Beastmen Clan, they are not a space marine chapter.
Ah, the curse of theme. Yeah, the way the theme sits in my head, this list doesn't fit.
We have an option 2, so let's check it out too...
And because investing so much work and time in something it should be able to make fun playing and winning from time to time. So after studying the blog I came up with this:
Space Marine Captain, 1 x Stormshield, 1 x Relic Blade, Space Marine Bike
- - - > 180 points
Command squat, Space Marine Bikes, 4 x Melta, 2 x Lightning claws, 2 x Thunderhammers, 4 x Stormshields
- - - > 395 points
Dreadnought, Heavy flamer, Multimelta
- - - > 115 points
Dreadnought, Heavy flamer, Multimelta
- - - > 115 points
5 Scouts, CCWs & Boltpistols,
+ Sergeant, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x power weapon, melterbombs
- - - > 105 points
5 Scouts, CCWs & Boltpistols,
+ Sergeant, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x power weapon, melterbombs
- - - > 105 point
5 Scouts, CCWs & Boltpistols,
+ Sergeant, 1 x Combi-Melta, 1 x power weapon, melterbombs
- - - > 105 point
6 Scouts, Sniper rifles, rocket launcher
- - - > 98 points
6 Scouts, Sniper rifles, rocket launcher
- - - > 98 points
Land Speeder Storm, Heavy Flamer
- - - > 60 points
Land Speeder Storm, Heavy Flamer
- - - > 60 points
Land Speeder Storm, Heavy Flamer
- - - > 60 points
Total list: 1496
Honestly, I don't feel the bikes in this list, unless you modelled them as Centaurs or something similar.
Overall, an OK list, but nothing I would be writing home about. Let's start thinking outside the box a little...
So the models are basically the same, I only would model "the Chief and Bodyguards" with some kind of jetpacks and shoulder mounted weapons (a little bit tau XV-like). As for the list, it seems to be as good as it gets with scouts. Every unit packs some antitank and there are 5 heavy flamers for the rest. The Command squad is expansive but compared to the first list its not a "poser unit", is survivable and a tankhunter. The vehicles are much cheaper so it doesn't hurt that much when day get destroyed.
When the new Dark Eldar Codex came out, I tried working on something, but couldn't come up with something good, and tossed the idea as fast as it showed up.
So what do you think have I learnt something reading 3++? Do you have any improvements? Autocannons? I know its not that competitive but better than the first list, or not?
If you like to give it a try, than just keep normal moving Marines (Tacs, Devastors, Sternguard) and tanks out please, other things like terminators could be fun to convert though. Keeping it simple, so that opponents don't feel tricked by count as, was an other thing I considered but you can ignore it.
My best wishes to you, the other writers and the blog in general!

PS: I send this email also to Kirby but got no reply. Don't know if it just takes long or if he didn't want to. But you are anyways the proper guy to help with this, or not?
Yeah the boss is busy, or slacking, or something :) I am glad you emailed me, as this really "is my bag baby" as such.
See, when I see this theme, I see in my head:
1. More close combat oriented than neccesarily shooty.
2. On-
3. Batshit crazy.
4. Scout-heavy.
So which marine army fits this list well?
Black Templar.
I am going to make this quick, as I really don't know my asshole from breakfasttime when it comes to BT, but I know someone who's really good with assholes...
Erm, that didn't come out right....
Brolo~!
Check out some of his foot-list posts like these and see what you come up with.
