Lords of Terra: Tyranids

(<- my model! :O) Well! The poll has closed and it's offical, Kirby is taking Tyranids to Lords of Terra with 34 (47%) out of 74 votes. Eldar placed a far 2nd with 21 (28%) with Space Marines a close 3rd with 18 (24%). So, let's review my list and see if we cannot make anychanges! Remember, I've got my order incoming for all my Hive Guard and a couple fexes for Tervigons (+ more Gants) but still need a 3rd ed fex for my 2nd T-Fex. If anyone has one of these available, pics please so I can conisder buying! *looks @ Vince*. Here is my current 1750 list:

HQ -

Hive Tyrant w/HVC, Old Adversery, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, LW & BS

Tyrant Guard w/Lash Whip

Elites -
Hive Guard x2

Hive Guard x2

Hive Guard x2

Troops -
10x Termagants

10x Termagants

Tervigon w/Catalyst, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Cluster Spines

Tervigon w/Catalyst, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Cluster Spines

Fast Attack -
4x Raveners w/Rending Claws

Heavy Support -
Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon, Cluster Spiners, electroshock grubs

Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon, Cluster Spiners, electroshock grubs

Totals: 1745 points
MCs: 5
Infantry: 31 (inc. 4 beasts)

So any potential changes or ideas? I'd like to fit in onslaught on the Tervigons for early Hive Guard shooting but don't see that happening without dropping the Tyrant which I'd like to try and keep for Old Adversery (making even the T-Fexes/Tervigons somewhat 'scary' in combat). So I need to get painting and practicing. For anyone in the area or who would like to use Vassal, I'm available after June 18th to start games (final exam). Let's get this ball rolling!

I think it looks plenty good. I may have to test out an Old Adversary Tyrant and see how it works over the fexstar.

I think Old Adversary is very complementary to a "walking shooty" 'Nid army like this; it gives you a pretty devastating CC unit and makes the rest of your swarm very unpleasant to assault.

Onslaught does seem like a really good power for this sort of army. Maybe run one Catalyst, one Onslaught? You could also drop Adrenal on one of the Tervis and replace it with Onslaught, since you have the 5pts left, but I generally like to have AG/TS in pairs. I suppose it depends a lot on what kind of armies you're worried about facing.

Hey Kirby,

Drop a Ravener for Onslaught on both Tervigons and an 11th Termagant in one unit. Weaker amount of Raveners but be conservative and you'll see them hit combat. They'll be slightly less effective but I think the lessened impact is worth the effects of catalyst or onslaught each turn as opposed to just one of the powers for the game.

You could be a real arse purely because you're gonna get hit with the comp stick solidly anyways and instead drop the Raveners completely to free up 140pts, Drop the Tyrant Guard for another 65pts so you are sitting on 205pts.

This exposes the Tyrant to firepower and death much easier, but we've 205 pts to mess with now and a second Tyrant is definitely an option to bring in more redundancy in the list and a bit more anti-heavy suppression at range.

Another way to go is Drop the Raveners completely, giving you 140pts to mess with, drop a single Hive Guard, takes you to 190pts, now run a naked Tervigon and give Onslaught to two of the Tervigons in total. You could push this further and drop the Raveners, a Hive Guard and the Tyrant Guard to have 255pts to mess with opening the door for quite alot of options (trimming TS or AG's on one of the Tervigons would give you the points for a 3rd Tyrannofex for example) but the one I am thinking of is Troops 5: 10 Termagants with Fleshborers (50pts) and Troops 6: Tervigon, Onslaught (175pts) + add Onslaught to the other two Tervigons (30pts). I'd also then trim AG's off one Tervigon so as the 3rd Tervigon can also run Catalyst (-5 = 1,740pts +10 = 1,750pts). The list would look like this:

HQ -
Hive Tyrant w/HVC, Old Adversery, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, LW & BS

Elites -
Hive Guard x2

Hive Guard x2

Hive Guard x1

Troops -
10x Termagants

10x Termagants

10x Termagants

Tervigon w/Catalyst, Onalsaught, Toxin Sacs, Cluster Spines

Tervigon w/Catalyst, Onslaught, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Cluster Spines

Tervigon w/Catalyst, Onslaught, Cluster Spines

Heavy Support -
Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon, Cluster Spiners, electroshock grubs

Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon, Cluster Spiners, electroshock grubs

Totals: 1750 points
MCs: 6
Infantry: 35

Weaker in some ways, far stronger in others, and don't overlook using Onslaught on the Tyrannofexes either in order to keep pace with the smaller guys. The Tyrant is a bit more vulnerable but alot of people are going to be much more freaked out by 3 scoring tervigons especially in the Aussie meta where you will face multiple objective games and having scoring MC's that can also fart out more scorers is really nice.

That'd be my suggestion for the force just to push it a little bit further and make it that bit harder in the tournament meta based off of what I've seen at tournaments thus far.

Also, shoot me an email when you are done your exams and definitely be up for a game against this. I can run the nid list I was gonna run that got slammed for being cookie cutter despite the absolute fail it represents. Against Nids it might well stand a chance...or I can run my Dread Wolves...which might struggle (but then, against Nids it's the one army they do bad against in theory) but will give itself a good showing anyways. :D

Cheers mate, I'm just annoyed I can't make it up for LoT myself, it'd be great to see people's reactions to it all. Be sure to get LOTS of photo's. :D

Auretious Taak.

P.S. Anyone else headed to LoT and wanting practice games and don't mind playing against a few subbed models (I don't have drop pods, and need 2 dreads lol :p) I am more then happy to get games going, I'm out in the SW of Sydney near Liverpool for reference.

Yo Kirbs,

Both lists are quite nice (Taaks too), I'm not sure which one I would go with. The 2nd tyrant seems a solid option as I think the list will have enough scoring units to be effective in objective games). Id suggest dropping the Tyrant Guard but I would keep the Raveners <3 However, this doesn't give you many points to work with... Add more raveners ftw ^^.

Seriously though, either list will be hard to vs, both should do well (except in comp) and I hope to play vs the Nids soon! After our exams baby :D

Not a fan of the 3 Tervis Taak, not enough punching power I think at this points level. Though dropping a Ravener for Onslaught x2 is a good thought.

Agree with Puppy 100% on what Old Adversary does for this type of list. All of a sudden those crap combat MCs are landing 2-3 wounds.

Tyrant Guard is there to add some survivability for the Tyrant + spread whip goodness.

Auretious Taak said...

I can see why the Tyrant Guard is there, but a second Tyrant would give you 2 more MC eqivalent wounds and mean you could spread the Old Adversary fun around.

You could drop the raveners and either AG or TS on one of the Tervigons ( 150pts) to spend 30 on Onslaught for both tervigons and grab 2 more Hive Guard at 120pts though you'd have to drop lash whips on the single guard there (unless you drop AG on both Tervigons though). The Tyrant and Guard will last much longer and against lesser opponents they'll torrent the Tyrant and ignore the real threats in the list. regardless it ramps up the T6 wounds massively.

I'm not spending more money Taak! lol I think main changes will have to do with Tyrant & Raveners in an attempt to make the force as balanced as possible and put Onslaught on Tervigons. I could always go back to the Hormaguant idea instead of Raveners... Unlikely to get 2 Tyrants as well due to finding a 3rd ed Tyrant :(.

I'm not convinced on the Ravenors. I think they're an obvious target for insta-killing. I know that will take away str8+ shots from the big stuff, but i just don't think they're worth it.

How about a third hive guard in each unit or even some out-flanking genestealers to screw with peoples heads...

Other than that... how about a trygon to get the Ravenors in your opponents face??
