About Authors & Blog

Welcome to my blog! I will primarily be focusing on competitive Warhammer 40,000 tactics and analysis with some Warhammer Fantasy Battles by Games Workshop. I will be making an effort to use my blog to post views and advice on 40k and Fantasy whilst promoting discussion and learning to increase overall knowledge and tactical acumen of 40k and Fantasy players. To the top-left are also some in-site navigational links. A very important link is the Useful Articles section which has archived posts from multiple authors and sources which I believe are must-reads and would highly recommend you check them out. Although this blog is primarily aimed at competitive play the goal here is to promote better play and understanding across the board. Although as a general rule of thumb we don't like comp tournaments (it's just not 40k!), we are quite happy to look/discuss fluffy lists/non-optimised lists, etc. There is a fine balance between gaming and the hobby and we look to strike that balance.

Disclaimer: All pictures should be linked to the original source. If there is a broken link please let me know. Furthermore, if individuals note their models/artwork on here and want written credit or wish to have their work removed send me an e-mail so I can fix it up.

Enjoy your stay and let us know what you think through comments or e-mails! We love to hear from you.

Me!:

My name, is Will (or Kirby).

I'm white, really white. So white that when black lights come on, I go purple. It sucks for things like Laser Tag and bars but it's great on a cool day when you've got your very own heat lamp walking next to you (me). I've lived in Australia and the United States (in multiple locations) on and off for most of my life with 7 or 8 major overseas moves. I am currently renting a flat from my parents which is overall my...counting um oh screw it like 30th place to live. I can put that on my resume right?

In case you haven't noticed yet I love parenthesis (or brackets for you Aussies; see what I mean!) and they will crop up all over the place. When I write research reports and essays it's very difficult for me not to use them. Also I'm a stickler for grammar. My grammar isn't going to be perfect on here because this is my place to relax (it doesn't work like that but the idea is sound) and I don't want to be proof reading my work all the time. There shouldn't be anything too major but if there is, point it out and I'll fix it. And on that note my studies. I currently have a BSc-Psychology degree and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychology and am doing research work at an Australian University relating to Internet Addiction! I did my thesis on the relationship between Internet Addiction, Emotional Intelligence and Personality which I will be able to post up shortly...until then, just assume you're addicted and all will be swell!

I've played Warhammer 40k since oo 1997 I guess and have had armies in Eldar, Space Marines (inc. variants), Dark Eldar, Tau and Tyranids. You can check out my armies in the My Armies page or over on 3++ - The painting side; I'm currently working on putting all of my Marines together so I can have a big interchangable force and am practicing for Centurion; Australia's 'largest' non-comp tourney based upon NOVA. No I haven't won any tournaments in 5th edition and if you feel that invalidates what is said on this blog, well can't help you there I'm afraid.

So besides my obvious love on nerdy things like computer games, laser tag and 40k, I am a basketball fanatic. Love the game and play it whenever I can (5'11" and can dunk :)) and watch any and all NBA games that air in Australia (i.e. 3ish a week). You'll find me randomly spouting off predictions and curses because of it but that's life. The missus hates it (P.S. whilst she hates being called the missus she'd hate even more if her name was published here so, she shall henceforth be known as... The Missus).

Blog Mission and Goals:

So enough tooting of my horn. This blog will focus mostly on Warhammer 40,000 armylists and tactics from a competitive and tournament perspective. There is also a growing proportion of information being devoted to Warmachine & Hordes. This is both with new authors focused on these gaming systems totally and regular authors such as myself and Vinsanity getting into the game.

Don't get me wrong, I love fluff and will play fluffy games and armies and really enjoy painting and modelling my armies. However, when I go to a tournament the lists I talk about here are what I will be taking and fluffy/non-competitive games can still use good tactics! My aim for this blog has been to teach and explain these tactics and whilst the blog looks quite extensively at analysing army books, army lists and general builds, the primary goal of this site is to improve every one's gameplay. By upping the skill level of not only yourself but your opponents, games will be closer, more competitive and ultimately more fun.

Learning from mistakes or other individuals insights is a huge part of maturing not only as a person but a gamer (we've all made mistakes and admitting them is good for you psychologically :P!). You're more than welcome to argue with me on this blog, I won't censor you as long as you argue civilly. I welcome disagreement (even if I think you're wrong ^^) as it promotes learning on both sides, even if in the end I am proven wrong or change my mind. Learning is about growning and discussion promotes learning.  At the same time I don't want this to become a place for flame baiting. I know some things written by some people are terrible but I don't want to sit here and have them be insulted continuously. Much better to explain why what they said is wrong or bad and again promote learning. That all said and done, if you want to play me, bring it! I welcome all challenges because it's a game I like to play. Even if we live across oceans I'm sure we can find a way.

But otherwise if you have any questions, would like me to look at your army list, have a battle report, an awesome army you want to show off or whatever, drop me a line at kirbys40kblog@gmail.com and I'll get back to you ASAP (about 1-2 weeks until posted on th blog currently). Remember the goal of this blog is to promote good generalship and army building for everyone. I want people to come away having read this blog with a better understanding of 40k and pose a better challenge to all who play against them. The best and most fun games are when two excellent lists and generals tee off against each other.

Kirby.

GWvsJohn:

A little bit about me. I live in our nation's capital (I'm gonna go ahead and assume you're all American, because that's what we do :) ). I'm married, and in about a month, I'm going to be a (Medical) Doctor. So, I guess I can handle any health related questions in addition to 40k. For my gaming history, I started playing exactly when the 2nd ed box came out. Played hardcore all through 2nd ed and into 3rd ed. I fell off during college and missed all of 3.5 and 4th ed (there was 3.5, right? Or is that only D&D?) I've gotten back into the game with the advent of 5th ed and have hit the web-side of 40k pretty hard.

Besides Kirby's blog, you may know me from banging my head against the wall on Warseer or getting yelled at by Stelek. I'd say I'm an A- list writer (if my posts here haven't convinced you, please see: all my advice being ignored on Warseer, a guide I wrote that Stelek liked here and my award winning Mycetic Spore army here) I'd also say I'm a B- player. Deployment vexes me, I get hung up on objectives, and I'm the worst roller ever on the vehicle damage chart (arguably the most important roll in the game) Still I think I have something to add. Due to my schedule and a crippling inability to paint, most of my gaming takes place online. On Vassal (scary, right?) For those not familiar, Vassal is, for the most part, a barren wasteland of stupidity and noobism. Still, the roving bands of mutants are usually up for a game, and I'm happy to oblige.

Long-term, I'm hoping my articles will be battle reports, army list analysis and tactical thoughts. I also run the Vassalmunda campaign http://groups.google.com/group/vipers-cove and will be posting a fair number of articles about Necromunda.
Roland:

First off I'd like to give Kirby a big thanks for allowing me to contribute to his blog! You've all probably seen me around here, on YTTH, Librarium Online, and B&C, and know a little bit about me already so I'll make this short and sweet. I've been playing WH40K off and on since 1998. I was actually first introduced to 40K by a friend who was playing 3rd Space Wolves at the time, and I must say since then I've been a die hard fan of those crazy space vikings. I didn't get real big into 40K though until around 2003 and 4th Ed, and in particular right around the time Imperial Armor III came out. At that point I was hooked and began my first REAL army with Imperial Guard (namely Elysians). I've been a dedicated Guard player since then and have been trying to balance that love with my Wolves. My main passion in the game is for fluffy/themed/story driven campaigns, and that is usually what me and my friends play: in depth map campaigns. As such I've got tons of ideas on campaigns, from how to set one up, to running them (I was one of the developers, if you will, of LO's first online campaign "Aurora Prime", in addition to campaigns run at our LGS and amongst friends.) Additionally I like making and playing fun and somewhat fluffy armies that still have a nice competitive bite. It's these two areas I'll write most about: fun army lists (especially for campaigns / theme games) and, well, campaigns.

Which brings me to my two armies. I play a fun/semi fluffy Aircav Guard list that is moderately competitive, which will probably be completely revamped in the coming months as IA8 comes out with a whole new Elysian list (including amazing models for Fast Attack gun trucks...I'm debating buying some to convert into Hydras...) As for my Space Badass..I mean Wolves, they are my tournament/competitive army.

Look forward to providing some interesting content!

Roland

AbusePuppy:

So I'm AbusePuppy (abuse as a noun, not a verb; it's important!), the new guy here. Erm, one of the new guys, I guess. I'm a horrible, white, American male nerd- that is to say exactly like every other person on the internets. I live in the beautiful northwest, where I am perpetually shrouded in rain and bearded guys wearing sandals. I've played Warhammer 40K off and on for a long time now, dating all the way back to second edition and all the absurdity thereof, but only relatively recently have I actually begun playing on any kind of competitive level. Being stuck in a tiny-ass little town means not getting as many games as I'd like, but you do what you can. I have variously followed other nerd hobbies (Magic, Battletech) in similar fashions, although I can't claim any particularly impressive trophies to my name as a result. Suffice to say I am interested in the breakdown of high-end competition of many games, although my dedication, time, and money are not always up to supporting said interest to its fullest degree.

Unless Kirby signs on someone with Tourette's Syndrome I'll probably be the most vulgar of the contributors here, so bear with me, and if any of my posts or comments mysteriously disappear... well, it won't be hard to guess why. I am also, as a result of years and years of being heavily immersed in books, something of a stickler for "correct" spelling, grammar, and formatting- nothing irks me more than the uncapitalized mess of typos and outright errors that generally passes for internet communication. If it helps, you may wish to read all my posts as being in a slightly nasal British voice to represent my combined air of sophistication and condescension; a lot of people find that helps. Also, like Kirb, I love me some parentheticals as well as semicolons, ellipses, and- just occasionally- hyphenated sentences.

Outside of the game my interests tend to be pretty broad-ranging, although anything resembling mainstream U.S. culture generally bores me to tears, especially sports and celebrity news. I'm a sucker for anything nerd-related, though, and especially the internets, god bless each and every one of them.

Vinsanity:

Hi, my name is Vince and I will bit contributing a bit on 3++ as a guest author. I know there aren't many warhammer fantasy articles on here and I will be trying to address that, as well as branching out in other areas as well like a bit of 40K, some painting articles, some Blood Bowl articles and some Necromunda articles and possibly even Space Hulk articles.

A bit about myself- 20 years old, studying Law/Economics combined degree, like most sports, especially Aussie Rules, NFL and NBA. I play 40k, Fantasy, Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Space Hulk, Mordheim.

40K armies - lots of CSM, SM, lots of IG, GKs, Eldar, Necrons, BTs, SoB.

Fantasy - WoC, Empire, Beastmen, Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts, Lizardmen

Bloodbowl - close to 20 teams in 4 different leagues, too many to name :D

Necromunda - Van Saars, Goliath, Enforcers, Escher

Mordheim - Possessed, Undead, Beastmen

Smurfy:

So, a lil' about the Smurfy.

I am 22 closing on 23 years old, and a short lil' runt of a guy 5'5" tall. (Hence the Smurfy tag.) I have played 40k for close to 10 years now, starting with BA, moving to Tyranids, Space Marines, Orks, Tau, Eldar and trying every concievable thing on VASSAL just to say, "Hey, so that's what to expect."

Means I have no life? Not quite. Getting through college, have a good amount of friends who don't even know what this hobby is, but they do love discussing military tactics, world issues, and politics, so we aren't exactly fools. I consider myself a average hobbyist, as though I know I can go all the way to win, I usually hold back and well, pride my work on being a better painter/converter than  gamer now.

I play 40k once to twice a week, usually try to against 1 new person and 1 old standby. I vary my location (place I play at) when I can. This is usually between VASSAL, the poor substitute it is, the Portola Plaza Games Workshop store in Mission Viejo, California or the Los Angeles Battle Bunker in, of course Los Angeles, California. I do not have big ego, but I do know how to call on bad tactics or bad advice and I shake my head, try to offer my opinion before the bigger guys use their bigger voices to mark their superiority in their gaming. (Quite sad really.)

I am noted as a marked YTTH ZombY as I have tagged with Stelek wherever he goes, I really believe in a lot in what he has to say, but I do have some differing opinions. Regardless - The dice are the real tellers of games, regardless of how much tactics/math you think you know.

Auretious Taak:

Auretious Taak (aka Ram Rock Ed First) is your average 4 foot 33 inch tall fellow whom has started to prove that when the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse arrives in 2012, he is going to survive for much longer then almost anyone else. Having survived in the zombie apocalypse survival game urbandead in the closed perma-death borehamwood server for the past 21 and a bit months straight, proven that pacifism is very much a way of life in Dead Frontier (ask the vets for Capitalist Dog!) and that being a noob to Humans Vs Zombies doesn't mean you'll die first, or last, but 2nd or 3rd last by a matter of minutes and still be shooting down a dozen zombies in your own private last stand once everyone around you on your bridge has been killed and turned into zombies, he is quietly confident that whilst the rest of the gaming community runs outside exclaiming that 'This is the Best Day of My Life!' and promptly getting eaten alive and zombified, he will be soiling himself in a corner and trying to hide for as long as possible before grabbing a spear and shield and venturing into the unknown.

Zombies aside, this young 25 year old Macquarie University Student dabbles in historically accurate Viking Re-enactment, spends a good chunk of his time playing browser based rts games online and messing around with any of a number of miniatures based games, primarily of the Games-workshop variety - namely Mordheim and Warhammer 40,000 with the occasional Warhammer Fantasy Battles Pure Night Goblin Army game (this is the 4th edition of the game where nothing but Night Goblins, Giants, stone trolls, squigs and snotlings are used in the army!). Known better as Ram Rock Ed First amongst many Mordheim players worldwide, his biggest achievement in wargaming was the collaborative authorship and playtesting of the Snotling Warband for Mordheim. A very occasional ninja guest author on Yes The Truth Hurts, he has pissed off a large chunk of the games-workshop based blog viewers on the interwebs at one point or another and was banned from wargamerau within 2 weeks of active posting due to his very vocal and blunt in your face attitude to posting in a comp environment based forum with a non-comp way of gaming.

He brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the Mordheim game to 3++ is the New Black in the hopes that many more people will take up this game that, like such classics as Man 'O War, has been abandoned by Games-workshop Official Support. Confused as to why he is speaking in 3rd person, Auretious Taak decides that everyone must experience the epicness that is Robot Unicorn Attack and encourages people with great gusto to follow this link.

VT2:

Master Kirby has seen fit to alter my mind, so that I may better serve his minions as a pink lieutenant, and fitted my spine and brain with several pinktrons, to ensure loyalty and obedience.

How do I feel about all this? Well, I don't feel at all - seeing as the kirb-o-meter at the base of my skull prevents emotions and erroneous thought.

But in all seriousness, I'm the latest addition to this blog.

Been playing 40,000 since early 1998, and still going strong. I've owned and gamed with pretty much every army at one point or another - chaos demons being the one and only real exception - but my true love is all things in power armor and terminator armor.

Whether they're wearing spikes, holy silver armor, robes, golden nipple armor, dress up as vikings, or crusaders in disguise doesn't matter. If they're in power- or terminator armor, they're my cup of tea, and I'll be glad to answer any questions about them.

Over the coming days, I'll be uploading a rather large, hopefully rather detailed guide to the vanilla space marine codex. It's my reply to all the people out there who claim regular marines are horrible, just can't compete, and anyone playing them should stick to the latest flavor-of-the-month marine 'dex - a reasoning I strongly disagree with.

Fester (with a big F!):

G'day g'day.
My name is fester (with a little f). No, seriously, a LITTLE f.
I am another Aussie on the world stage, and I will be bringing you the random crazy hobby stuff that none of you actually want to hear about, but are going to be subjected to anyway.

On top of that, and on a more relevant note, I am the TO behind Centurion, which Kirby has kindly talked about for me, but has now decided that the information should come from the horses mouth. I didn't take kindly to being called a horse (of course of course), but that is another story for another day.

Anyway, back to the real world.
Over the next few months you will be hearing from me sporadically as I try to break up all the WAAC Army lists and general Kirby Awesomeness © and sling some crazyness around (more than normal). He means crazy ideas like this...

Finally, as part of the Pink Army now, I have stolen a colour to snowmobile with... Be nice :)

Rupert:

I’m 27 years young and I’ve been involved in wargaming and figure painting since 1994, I love winning trophies!

I’ve been playing in tournaments since the first ever Gaming Club Network tournament in which I came 3rd from last overall, and scored last for painting, not my finest moment by any means. Since then I’ve participated in numerous tournaments around England with varying success.

As a child playing 2nd edition, I was that little kid who plays the adults in the store and on occasion causes a bit of an upset and I’ve never looked back from playing at a competitive level since then. When 3rd came out I was sitting high school exams and I was out of the game for a while and then played Blood Angels terribly. During 4th I went from power gaming to collecting armies I thought looked good and getting my ass handed to me in tournaments. Since 5th I’ve taken a more competitive stance and I am really enjoying it although in tournaments my unwitting poker-face expression would suggest otherwise.

I live and work in London and I am also a post-grad student. I play 5-a-side football horrendously, am a fan of trance music and love to read about military history. I used to paint professionally but doing your hobby as a job was a bad move and now I paint armies to play in tournaments and hopefully win a best painted army trophy along the way, I typically paint two 1750 point armies a year and normally each one is painted in about a month.

I hope to shed light on how to paint all manner of armies quickly and to a high standard as well as giving insight into tournament gaming in England.

Koopa:

Hello! My name is Matthew, mkoop or Koopa. I am an avid miniature hobbyist, I enjoy modeling conversions and painting. I have been painting (primarily oil on canvas) and sculpting (plaster and clay mediums) for around 15 years. I am currently working on my Masters degree at the University of Wisconsin in Computer Science (specifically, network security). I have always enjoyed the modeling and painting aspect of Warhammer a great deal. I have been refining my skills as one can never know enough about color theory and different painting techniques. I have several friends here who are amazing hobbyists and I am constantly picking their brains. I hope to bring to you some articles that will take the fear out of painting and help defeat the sea of grey we so often see on the table tops. I have recently purchased a new air brush and a brand new in box blood angels army. I hope to provide you all with some great tips, articles and anything else I can think of as far as painting and modeling. I am also an avid Warhammer Fantasy player and take part quite significantly in the tournament scene. So I hope to also bring to you some articles, lists and fantasy strategy as I continue to learn about 40k!

Kuolema0:

Hey, I'm Kuolema and I'll be another minion of the pink one. So I'm another aussie and no I don't say g'day, I don't ride kangaroos and I do not cook shrimp on a BBQ.
Silly stereotypes aside, You may call me Luke, I'm 19 and still have no idea what I want to do in life.
So does anyone really care about my personal history? No? Ok, moving on. =]
I am going to be writing up some warmahordes articles for 3++ which you will hopefully find interesting even if you don't plan on ever playing any of PPs games.

Archnomad:

Hello 3++ readers,

I'm the New Kid. Kirby just asked me to join 3++ as a regular (irregular is what he's getting) and I thought I may as well take him up on it. So, now I'm part of the legendary slave labour force that keeps 3++ churning quality stuff out to the masses. So if you don't mind humouring me, I'll talk a bit about myself. I'm Will/Billy Cruickshanks (Billy if Kirby's about, as he's also Will and there can be only one). I live in Scotland and am a huge geek. Anything "geeky" and I'm probably a practitioner, or have at least tried it. So I should fit in fine round here (:. I'm a regular, usually in the chatbox, and play all the game systems discussed on 3++.

I really have no idea what to write here. Uhhh... my preferred topics for advice would probably be Fantasy (this is loaded, means I'm going to get ALL the WHFB emails >: so do me a favour and just don't ask! :P), Warmahordes (although I'm pretty new at it), and 40k. I've been playing 40k the longest but play(ed) more WHFB and have done some extensive playing of the new edition (which I've actually stopped playing, but that's cause I have a 40k tourney up and coming and have fallen in love with Warmahordes). If you want more WHFB stuff check out http://kavzar.blogspot.com/. Kirby is delusional if he things I of ALL people wouldn't plug in here.

Ok so, WHFB, Warmahordes, 40k, but only competitive play. It's how I roll,
Archy
