Email in: GWvsJohn's 2k Tyranids

I tried it today. It kills like crazy, but I'm afraid its too slow to
get across the board.

280 Swarmlord
225 3 Tyrant Guard - Bonesword

95 Tyranid Prime - Lash Whip, Bone Sword, Rending Claws
180 3 Zoanthropes

150 3 Hive Guard

140 Deathleaper

50 10 Termagants
200 Tervigon - Onslaught, Catalyst, Toxin Sacs, Cluster Spines

150 4 Warriors - Deathspitter, Rending Claws

265 Tyrannofex - Rupture Cannon
265 Tyrannofex - Rupture Cannon

2000

Okay, first stuff on Tyranids :p. I'll do this a bit differently from the last list critique because I think the list is all over the place :P. John you bad boy.

Let's look at it from an opponent's perspective. I think the Swamrlord and Tyrant guard are rightfully scary and stand out. The Tervigon isn't boosting a bunch of crap in midfield so it can wait. The TYrannos are tough to take down assuming they are in cover so I'm going to leave them for now and suffer 4 S10 BS3 shots a turn especially since you can only onslaught one. The Warriors like the Tervigon can wait as there is only one squad of them and your Elites are all over the place. So, I'm going to shoot the hell out of your Hive Guard which can shoot me early and otherwise everything wants to go into the CC unit of death (i.e. Swarmlord). Then I can start to work on the Tervigon/Warriors/Zoans.

I think to make the Swarmlord work you need a really solid midfield list around him which can provide covering fire as he advances. I think Deathleaper is minorly less needed with the Swamrlord too but he is pretty awesome so I'd go either 3x2 Hive Guard or 2x3. Then I think drop the Prime and try and squeeze in 2 termaguns/tervigon squads + 2x Warrior squads. But that's prob way over the points limit so the Tryannos might have to be dropped...

What do you think of those ideas? Then we can try and build a list around the Swarmlord.

Swarmy needs midfield presence for sure, I like Hormies or Stealers to work with him, Raveners too if possible.

Dropping 1 Tyranno and DL (grab 6 HG) to pick up another Tervi and more Warriors/Horms/Stealers would be very handy. Outflank 20 toxin Horms and lol heartily.

OK here's something I quickly whipped up whilst talking with John.

Swarmlord
2x Tyrant Guards w/Boneswords

2x Hive Guard

2x Hive Guard

2x Hive Guard

4x Warriors

4x Warriors

Tervigon w/Onslaught, Catalyst, Toxin Sacs

Tervigon w/Onsalught, Catalyst, Toxin Sacs

10x Termaguants

10x Termaguants

Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon

Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon

2k on the dot.

I think this list has a lot more midfield presence but the lack of extra wounds on the Swarmlord isn't nice. Maybe mesh the Warriors together and make it smaller to give them some upgrades and another Tyrant Guard?

Thoughts?

What do the Warriors have? You could drop down to 3 and add a heavy weapon for wound allocation funsies to fit in another Tyrant Guard.

You could also lose the toxin sacs if you need points.

Ok trialed this with some proxy love.

Swarmlord
2x Tyrant Guards w/Boneswords

2x Hive Guard

2x Hive Guard

2x Hive Guard

6x Warriors w/Boneswords

Tervigon w/Onslaught, Catalyst, Toxin Sacs, cluster spine

Tervigon w/Onsalught, Catalyst, Toxin Sacs, cluster spine

10x Termaguants

10x Termaguants

Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon, Acid Spray, Cluster spine

Tyrannofex w/Rupture Cannon, Acid Spray, Cluster spine

Played against IG, spearhead, 4 objectives.

Problems with the list:
1) Swarmlord is slow as John alluded to. Whilst he has some nifty powers they are pretty short ranged and those Tyrants slow him down somewhat. If your Tyrant gets crap rolls and slow runs, your opponent can focus on your Warriors and Tervigons which you don't want.
2) It seems light on numbers but it's not. There's a lot of T6 wounds out there + 18 Warrior wounds and the gribblies. Termaguants will save your ass.
3) I've been skeptical about the Tfexes. Skeptics withdrawn. They didn't do that much against the tanks (fail bait) but their ability when they get close to decimate infantry is not to be overlooked.
4) Hive Guard are another thing I was skeptical about. But combined with the Tfexes does give a good bit of firepower as your advance. Even just shaking/stunning things is helpful as anyone who plays with Rifledreads can attest to.

Overall I think it's a pretty decent list. I think if you forewent the Swarmlord in favor of some Primes or a HT and then got some Harpies it could be more balanced. I really want to try the Parasite of Mortex just for giggles :P. Hey look termaguants everywhere and now rippers! But too many rolls to beat to actually get the Rippers.

Anywho, thoughts John?

Don't worry btw I won :). It's called tabling an IG army.

I think the 6 warriors with boneswords is a lot scarier than 8 without. That looks like a solid SL list, maybe as asolid as it goes. You should send that to Stelek.
