"hey Kirbs,
My name is iggy, I post here sometimes either as Ignacio or as 43, and with the same name in Heresy, YTTH, and so on.
Now, I have an upcoming tournament organized by the group of friends I play with. Format is 2000 points, standard missions, and I want to bring puppies. I was wondering if you could give me a hand with the list writing because I'm some points over and it seems everything is essential. Lists I expect to face are nids of some denomination, jetcouncil, kan wall, battlewagon nobz, some sort of IG and a ridiculously rocky CSM list with 4 land raiders.
So, the list I'm considering is as follows. I'll write what my doubts and problems are afterwards.
Rune Priest, Living Lightning, Storm Caller
6 Grey hunters
melta gun
Rhino
6 grey hunters
melta gun
Rhino
6 grey hunters
melta gun
Rhino
6 grey hunters
melta gun
Rhino
5 grey hunters
flamer
Las/Plas RBack
5 grey hunters
flamer
Las/Plas RBack
6 Wolf Guard
6 Combi-melta
Las/Plas RBack
5 Wolf Scouts
melta gun
5 wolf scouts
melta gun
Land Speeder
MM
Heavy Flamer
Land Speeder
MM
Heavy Flamer
1 TWC
Wolf Claw
5 Long fangs
4 Missile Launchers
Las/Plas RBack
5 Long fangs
4 Missile Launchers
5 Long fangs
4 Missile Launchers
So, there it is. The 2 hunter squads in razors will serve as objective sitters as well as allowing the 4 squads in rhinos to run forward and suicide melta stuff without me losing all my troops. the razors and long fangs provide fire support, the speeders zoom forward if I have first turn or deepstrike if I don't, the scouts have 2 melta shots to come in behind and disrupt something, and the TWC hangs back and counter charges or delays if necessary. I tried using bigger units of TWC and also tooled up lords but they attracted too much fire and never really seemed to kill much. The other day I tried using one TWC with a claw and a WGBL with a claw and 2 wolves and they were so low priority compared to everything else that they ended up charging sooner and killing more.
Now, to the issues. Mainly they boil down to me wanting a couple hundred more points and some extra FOC slots; but I'd better not hold my breath for that. So, my thoughts on this:
1. the TWC is very alone. I'd like to get a WGBL but to do that I'd have to get rid of the priest and get a few extra points somewhere. I like giving vehicles cover saves and being able to nullify fortune, so I'd rather he stayed
2. I'm not entirely sure about the scouts. My gut tells me that rifleman dreads would be better, but the one time I used the scouts they proved to be quite nice. I guess this is the part I'm most unsure of. Also because scouts are cheap and Riflemen are expensive, and I'm poor, but that is my own problem, give it to me without anesthetics!
3. I'm worried about the army being 'glass cannony' if the boxes start to break and shit starts getting assaulted. The issue is that tooling them up a bit more ends up costing quite a few points, and last time I playtested with more tooled up hunters instead of RBacks they died just as well when anything half serious charged them, so I think it's best to make them as cheap as possible. Still though, it's a little unnerving having only 6 man troop squads.
so, that's it. No matter what I'm gonna have to go and buy 4 RBacks, and maybe some dreads. The tournament will be somewhere around the end of september.
any thoughts?
Iggy / 43"
Counting this adds up to 1933 so correct me if I'm wrong. What I'd do is drop all 6 man GH squads to 5 and add a PWeapon or MotW to each. Combined with the extra Wolf Guard they are decent combat squads and have double melta to an extent. The Scouts are fine IMO as they give you some infiltration/outflanking if you need but with the points you have spare you can drop them in favor of Rifledreads. If you did this I'd also cut back on the Wolf Guard numbers. If you don't do this I'd go for another LasPlas RBack for another LF squad or cut some Wolf Guard numbers and grab a WGBL w/TWC (or you could just add another TWC to the squad).
Lot of options since you have about 70 points to play with atm and it's interesting to see these type of lists become more popular ^^! Lots of AV11 is fine, same with MSU. It forces your opponent to target a lot of units which is in itself a great defense. The issue would be your Grey Hunters melting away after their transports are popped but with 30 of them out there that shouldn't be too much of a worry.

ah right, just realized what I missed, the wolf guard have power weapons as well as combi melta, which is 60 points in total.
thanks for the help then. I think I'll run with scouts, simply because I have to buy 4 razorbacks still and thus the dreads will have to wait till the next time I have money =D
