Email in: Was reading 3++ and though I'de ask advise about a list I'm building [1750 SM]


"Hey Kirby,

I've been reading abit on your blog and while I don't agree with everything you say, I'de like your opinions on a marine list I'm building, it's going to be for Australian tournie play next year, but I'm not all that worried about Comp, I just want to play some games with a strong list. So please, share your thoughts and changes if you would make any, I'm curious for your opinions, this is a Salamanders marine army if that matters, so trying to keep 'in theme'

The missile and flamer squad is abit out htere, ubt I had them lying around, so cheaper then buying another melta squad

I had a thought from reading your blog, I could drop the flamer and missile squad for 5 (or more) sternguard in a rhino with two heavy flamers and three combi melta's, but then I'm worried about scoring

anyways mate, it would be good to hear your thoughts on this list, good or bad

I'm assuming this is 1750? Single Raiders never fair well I'm afraid and at 1750 points you're going to be hard-pressed to fit in a second one competitively. Vindicators are also not a great option (beyond their one gun syndrome) when you've got a Land Raider and assault unit on the board as those S10 pie plates could hit your own guys and you're then doing your opponents job for them (yes you can aim away from your guys but your opponent can huddle around your Raider too lol). Since it's 1750 I'd drop the Raider and attempt to go for a Thunderbubble styled army.

Dropping the PFists on the Tacs + the Redeemer gives you a little over 300 points to play with, enough points to grab two Sternguard squads and stick them in Rhinos with two heavies (keeping in theme would be MM). I'd personally swap the Vindicators over to Dakka Preds (further freeing up points and allowing for more speeders) but that's up to you. Vulkan and the Termies then 'wrap' around your army and/or move forward and force your opponent to either destroy them or attempt to take your army out with long-ranged firepower.

As someone who has run the Hammer Vehicle army with C:SM, it doesn't work.

@ 1750 i had 2 vindis and a LandRaider, and while opponents focus-fired on them (as was the goal) they never really acheived anything other than zone defense.

Can I suggest swapping the ML/Flamer squad out for 2 FlamerBack squads with combi-flamers?

Lose the Vindis as per Kirb's suggestion and grab some Flamer/Melta Bikes in the last FA slot.

For fluff reasons alone, I would consider leaving the LR in. Sure, it probably wont be as points-efficient as another 5 TH/SS termies, but this is Aussie comp-scene ... you have to make adjustments somewhere.

Flamerbacks in a marine list would be fail. Stick to asscannons or Las/plas, you cant move 12 and fire your flamerback, and its close enough to be assaulted. Drop vindi's for preds, possibly take a MM dread and a 5 man sternguard squad with combi meltas and h-flamers?

Agree on dumping the raider as well. Points better spent on more TH/SS models.

I don't play games at 1750 all that much but when I have I've had some very good success with the following list:

Vulkan
Libarian with Null Zone & the Avenger
5 TH/SS Terminators in a redeemer with multi melta & extra armor
2 dreadnoughts with multi melta heavy flamer & extra armor
10 man tac squad with melta gun multi melta combi melyta power fist in a rhino
10 man tac squad with flamer, missile launcher, and combi flamer with a hb razorback
2 units of 2 multi melta attack bikes
Land Speeder with multi melta & heavy flamer

9 mult meltas tend to take care of most things that I come across. The redeemer actually can live very easily as long as you are smart with movement & deployment.
