Malazan Book of the Fallen

I finally finished the Crippled God. I must say I dragged out the reading of both it and Dust of Dreams. I enjoyed both books and whilst it was nice to actually have a follow on in terms of an unresolved storyline from Dust of Dreams, I feel the earlier books in the series were better. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed both of them I just feel the earlier chapters were more...complete isn't the right word but fits the best I guess. Anyway, you may now all discuss the book to your heat's content. I warn anyone who reads the comments there will likely be spoilers...

I will say my biggest disappointment though is the lack of pen to paper on Ganoes Paran - particularly since he finally grasps the ability of his powers. Oh well.

Anywho now I just need to wait for Memory of Light to finish off Wheel of Time...

I agree that the earlier books were better, I think Midnight Tides was the high point for me and went down from there.

That said, this is the first series of books I have ever read that I have not been able to fit it all in my head - which is a strange and oddly satisfying feeling. Even with something as long as the Wheel of Time I have no problem remembering personal histories, faction relationships and so on, but Erikson actually writes in such depth and width that I cannot remember everything, and end up having to skim read old books/chapters to refresh my memory.

Also has one of the best systems of Magic and Gods I've seen in any series, and some of the funniest characters, ranging from Tehol and Bugg through to Quick Ben:

*Quick Ben senses Broach sneaking up on him through the wall and blasts him with half a dozen warrens, all woven together in impossibly complex ways*

Bauchalain: "That was impressive, but you really should have saved at least half your power to deal with me, you know"

Quick Ben: "I did..."
Excellent series, pushing some of my all-time favorites. And I'm really happy that it's not just the story that makes it good, but the writer's pace and style. That bodes well for any future books/series that he's going to write. And he writes relatively fast... books came out pretty fast considering how large they are, after suffering through the 1 book per several years of the later Wheel of Time and of a Song of Ice and Fire.

So I need to read more than the first book of the series.

I can't blame you if you gave up after book 1. The later books (first 3 in particular) help put it all in perspective, but it is a rough start.

I only own one of them, I have a huge stack of books that I need to read. It is just finding the time right now. I enjoyed the first book. To put it into perspective I have only read the first two of the Dark Tower series but I enjoyed them.
I was pretty pleased with this book. For once Ericson actually deems to explain stuff and everything starts to fit togeather. It hit both high and low notes needed to round out the series and ST and C sure proved to be awesome.

I await the sequal series with great interest.

That series was horrid....like a poorly written blow by blow from a home D&D campaign. Ugh....

good to always see your enlightened opinion ^^.

Care to say why you thought it was poorly written?
