Email in: Sisters of Battle list help

"Hi,
Long time reader of the blog, though I am mostly a fantasy player, but even I can tell the quality of your articles! Anyway, I have a local county-wide 1750 points tournament coming up and the organisers have been slating Sisters in all the tournament publications so I thought...lets come up with a decent list to show them the Nuns with Guns arent a complete failure! The tourney doesnt have any list restrictions, but it does have a soft score based on painting and composition judged by the players on the day.

I have quite a bit of lee-way with the list as i have quite a few spare models, the immolators all have their turrets magnetised so i can swop between the 3 options, so without further rambling:

Saint Celestine;
115 pts

Sisters of Battle squad (10); Combi-melta & Power Weapon, 2 x Melta-gun.
Rhino.
200 pts

Sisters of Battle squad (10); Power Weapon, Flamer, Heavy Flamer,
Rhino.
195 pts

Sisters of Battle squad (10); Power Weapon, Flamer, Heavy Flamer,
Rhino.
195 pts

Dominion Squad (5); 2 x Melta-gun.
Immolator; Twinlinked multi-melta.
170 pts

Dominion Squad (5); 2 x Melta-gun.
Immolator; Twinlinked multi-melta.
170 pts

Dominion Squad (5); 2 x Melta-gun.
Immolator; Twinlinked multi-melta.
170 pts

Exorcist;
135 pts

Exorcist;
135 pts

Penitant Engines (3);
255 pts

Total; 1740 pts

I admit I dislike the new codex, I find the options rather limited but here I have tried to go for a fast moving force that can make up for its lack of long ranged firepower. St Celestine can hide behind the rhinos untill she can move into a position to counter-attack anyone threatening my mid-field placed sisters squads. The Penitant Engines are included because not only do i like the models, they normally attract a disproportionate amount of firepower. Will probably get murdered by Grey Knights, but thats hardly suprising!

Now i know its not the greatest list, but i hope with your help it can be improved and yet not be just another MEQ mech list.
Peter"

There are both good and bad things about this list Peter. The Dominions + Celestine = tick. Exorcists are okay. The Pentient engines? Much less so and the same deal with the Sisters of Battle setup. I'd look to replace the engines with Heavy Bolter Retributors + transport of choice (I know you like the Engine models but they really are bad I'm afraid :() and make the Sisters of Battle meltagun/MM/combi-flamer. This makes them a double melta bunker unit much like Tactical Marines but obviously without all the nifty Space Marine toys and are slightly cheaper. You could run the Rhinos as Immolators just for extra firepower if you wish but then your Sisters have to hoof it.

Otherwise I'd look to add combi-meltas to the Dominion squads (3 meltas on that first salvo is a lot more reliable than two) and with the points spare you've shaved from dropping the Engines, buy Jacobus and his own pet DCA squad. +1A and FNP along with normal DCA is scary as hell and gives the army a legit counter-assault unit + Celestine to play around in combat whilst also ensuring you have some reliability in generating Faith for whatever needs you may have. You could also completely drop the Exorcists in favor of 3x Retributors + transport of choice since you do have 15+ melta weapons already and Rending Heavy Bolters aren't bad utility and give good firepower against infantry at range.

Yep lose the engines ...
They wont last with there low armour and open toped .
Id drop the engines, all those power swords, and one pack of Dominions and get a nice fat squad of Seraphim for The Saint to cruise around with so she doesn't catch an errant plasma gun shot and get a bad case of instant death. Loaded with hand flamers they become a pretty nice unit. Replace the engines with Retributors or Exorcist #3. Most importantly, remember to act humble when you thrash somebody with this crappy inferior WD codex. I recommend repeating the phrase "I guess I just got lucky" a lot.
Jacobus + 5 DCA + 5 'saders? Wouldn't 5 DCA and 4 'saders fit into a Rhino and thus the list better?
...Yes, but the difference between the two squad sizes is one model. It just seems to me if you are already considering being on foot for at least one turn, it seems like it would make more sense to take them a 35 point ride to get them closer at least.
I think getting less than 3 Exos is a bad idea. While it sure isn't fantastic, at least it can reach out and touch someone. HB retris seem pretty nice, but considering that they need to pass their act of faith AND roll some sixes to engage armour... well, that seems a bit risky to me. Even more so than Heavy D6 organ rockets.

I have 7 Immolator chassis and 3 Exorcist turrets so I can mix and match between Rhinos, Immos, and Exos. I've run with just 2 Exorcists for several years and though I would like to run a 3rd, I don't think its essential and it would cost me a Rhino or Immolator. I've never lost both in one game and I've never really felt under gunned because of all the melta elsewhere. In the new book, a small pack of Retributors with 4x heavy bolters is just so stupidly cheap I can't not take them. I haven't bothered with their Act of Faith yet because in my first 2 games they spent the whole time shooting at Lootas and Devastators in cover. I'm reasonably happy with them so far and I'm not ready to swap them for Exo #3 just yet. (At least not until I get another Immolator/Rhino hull...)
Solid changes by Kirby, comes up to almost the same list I run: Celestine, Jacobus, one Battle Conclave, 3x Battle Sisters, 3x Dominions, 2s Exo, 1x Retri w/HB. It's hard to come up with much different stuff given that ranged fire support is rather expensive, Troops are over expensive, and there aren't many good options in most slots.
HQ: Celestine/Jacobus. maybe a 2nd priest instead of Celestine to unlock another Conclave
Elite: Battle Conclave (1?) in Rhino or Immo with MM
Troops: Sisters with MM/MG in Rhino, maybe a combi-Flamer
Fast: Dominions, 2xMG, probably with combi-MG, in Immo with MM
Heavy: Exorcists, maybe with 1-2 Retributors for ranged anti-infantry. I like 2/1 as the best combo.

Other options: Repentia aren't bad if they steal a ride from Retributors (hide them behind the Rhino in turn 1 so they can't see an enemy unit). They're still not good, but they are a major threat to vehicles that didn't move over 6". Seraphim are poor in general but provide an escort for Celestine. Their pistols are too expensive (60 pts for 4 half-range melta, where other armies pay 10 pts per full melta). Infernus Pistols are fine at 15 on a Sergeant since you pay for the chance to get another weapon, but not as the main special weapon option in a squad that's purchased for its shooting ability. They should be 10, and Hand Flamers at 5. Especially since Seraphim are far weaker at short range otherwise than BA Assault Squads.

My 2k list is pretty similar but I trade Dominions for Seraphim for the Saint to hang out with and a squad of Repentia (who have shocked me with their awesomeness: 4 kills kans and some orks w/o dying off, 5 TH/SS terminators but died for the effort)... I tried running a squad of Celestians with Uriah and I like them on paper, but they haven't gotten into the game yet except for some shooting. They are probably gonna get swapped for more (crappy) Troops or Dominions (who I haven't tried yet.)
