6th edition starter set Dark Vengeance - preorders

So the shiny 6th edition start set of DA & CSM is finally a week out so pre-orders are up. And to eek that extra bit of moneys from you all, there's a limited edition which gets you everything normal and this...

And then all the pretty models below as stock standard for those of you who haven't seen them yet...

All these for the paltry cost of double what Assault on Black Reach started out to be. If you live in Australia that is. AoBR was $90 AUD when first released, DV is $180. Inflation sucks! And of course if you really want to go all out.. a customised carry case!

*wonders whats wrong with your basic carry case*

They've also released a novel and "audio drama." So go nuts and question aloud when the mini-rulebook might be sold solo.

* Wonders just how long the limited run of that carry case lasts, my guess 2 years.

It is rather limiting and most people tend to want to expand just a tad beyond a starting force (wWell two in this case)

You can get custom foam for GW cases from a number of sources. Getting that Dk Green case might be cool
You cant really see it in the picture but there is a 3rd layer in the bottom with the standard GW slots to expand into. Not so bad for a starter case.
It might just be one force if the rumors about the Cypher ally swap are true.
Well I'm buying 3, but the other two will be at a later date from a discounter. Im excited to see the hell brute. I wonder how some properly corrupted puppetswar walker weapons would look on that thing

For the record it's nothing like double what Black Reach was in real money
The Combat Company has preorders up for $130, they're shipping on the 31st.
i guess all the real work went onto the chaos guys
its nice to have some chaos models that look like chaos and not spiky marines

They're still spikey marines. Now they're just cooler looking spikey marines. Spikey marines to make your old 60+ spikey marines feel self concious when they deploy... Time to build an army out of possessed bits & chosen
For those of us lucky enough to be in the UK £50 for the standard version from Wayland is a pretty sweet deal. You could pay just that for the Deathwing and Ravenwing squads. Of course here's hoping they fix the points costs on plasma pistols on the DA codex, I love plasma as a concept but GW have sometimes dropped the ball on the rules.

Just ordered my Limited Edition from Triple Helix for £52 with free shipping. And have now just listed everything bar the rulebook and templates on eBay :)

Here's to getting me some more Nids with the proceeds :)

now i just need to find someone to buy the lame loyalists off of me and I'm set or trade for more awesome chaos.
You know I have yet to hear anyone say "Forget that Chaos, someone give me all their Dark Angels!". Expect to see price inflation to match i.e. Chosen £15 vs Terminator/Tactical £10 and Cultists £25 etc.

Seems like it might be a good time to start stockpiling models for that doublewing army... I know I'll be picking up 10 Deathwing to be co-opted into my Ravenguard army, if not some bikes as well.

My buddy & I are splitting two boxes.... he gets the marines & I get the chaos... I feel like I'm ripping him off

damn lack of editing ability.... maybe I'll let him keep both sets of measuring sticks to even out the imbalance in the models.
Oh, I'll say it then: Forget that Chaos, someone give me all their Dark Angels! Totally going to try a local Chaos player to trade with. Can never have enough Dark Angels. Chaos? Meh, don't plan on ever playing/starting that army.
the whole box is like $600 AUD in value costing only 180 i dont mind paying that
If you live in Australia that is. AoBR was $90 AUD when first released, DV is $180. Inflation sucks

It sure does; $180 Oz = £118, I think I could ship two copies to Oz (via surface mail) for that amount of money.

Discount retails have got the Limited Edition up for £53 here in the UK which should be $81 Oz Dollars (plus a little bit for the extra shipping). No wonder GW stopped them shipping to Oz. Perhaps I should just sell my unwanted figures on Oz Ebay! I am only really buying it for a Rule Book.

but then you add costs of the item, things dont transfer over just in exchange rate, you got inflation to add to the price
You're not making any sense. Exchange rate plus shipping. What has inflation got to do with anything?
What's really crap is that it's 107 in the US (off the GW web store) and at Australian pricing that would be.... 103 Australian.. - instead it's 180. What the &uck?
There is no excuse for this. None.
So if anyone would like to ebay this, make 10 quid plus postage, get in contact with me. Otherwise I'll annoy a cousin in the UK ..

how much does gasoline cost in each country? How about a 800sqft apartment? How about a dinner out? What is minimum / average wage? Different shit costs different amounts in different countries for a variety of reasons. The argument that "Company X screws us because it sells the same product to us for twice the price that they sell it to those guys for" is complete BS.

Example: a paperback novel printed for sale in North America will have Canadian & US pricing printed on the cover. Typical pricing will be 8.99 USD / 12.99 CDN while our currency is roughly equal in value. That means that in Seattle the same book costs $4 less than it does in Vancouver even though the two cities are only 60 minutes apart. The cost of living & therefore the cost of doing business is higher in Canada than the USA for a variety of reasons. Our population density & therefore markets are smaller, we pay a higher minimum wage, we have a different structure for import / export tarrifs than our neighbours and frankly for most of my life the US dollar was work about $0.75 - $0.80 Canadian and only recently have we reached parity so we're still used to paying a bit more for the same goods & are prepare to accept it.
Sure cost of living and local taxes have an impact on price; it still does not justify more than a 100% increase in price.

I buy most of my Magic the Gathering cards from America because UK shops take the dollar price and try to sell the cards for the same amount of pounds. So a $10 USA card costs £10 UK = $15 USA actual cost. even with postage it is cheaper to ship them in.
the cost of living in Australia is greater than most countries in the world, we pay the most taxes and have a higher income per person. its a wonder why australians pay more on a item. the only difference when we pay something cheaper is like fuel which is like $1.30-49 atm per litre
I wonder what the point values are. Unless the Hellbrute is insanly high you want have equal sides right out of the starter set which means I don't think GW understands the point of a "starter" set....again...
6 replies · active 659 weeks ago
We've seen the stats. The sides are unbalanced in favour of the marines.

And GW understands that they sell lots of marines. So biasing starting players to buy marines means more people buy marines, and that means more people are buying, right?

Of course, it's a bit complicated because among everyone else - who don't really care about the viability to the two forces against each other, the Chaos are much more desirable.

the missions are currently in the WD. I have read through the first 5 missions & at no point do either army use their "full and complete" set. In fact it is either mission 4 or 5, but the DA player starts with ONLY his librarian against 10 cultists. 10 more cultists come from reserves in turn two, followed by the chosen in turn 3 and the DA reinforcements are the death wing on turn 4. Very unbalanced but "cinematic" battles....
That sounds awesome, that is the kind of game I like to play. Just for fun and presents a unique challange, not just who can power game the best list.

You mean except for mission 5 and 6 (kill points and relic) where they use all models?
So, in the two big battles that the others were practice for, chaos will fight an uphill battle.
The Space Marines obliterate the Chaos Forces in all 6 White Dwarf battles, and in the replays.

They are supposed to "Comfortably" outnumber the marines - somehow, I'm not sure 7 extra models whering trenchcoats are comfortable outnumbering against marines.

Even the White Dwarfers comment on it - 'the numbers didn't feel like much against the boltguns'.

For internal balance, the box is terrible.
I'm shocked. No, truly.

Oh wait, I'm lying.

I called it being totally imbalanced in favour of the Marines last week. I *so* informed you thusly...

So there is a standard box as well without the crappy chappy model? How much in Aud is the normal box without the crappy chaplain in it?

Same price, they just take the "Limited Edition" sticker off of the box.
lol so true

clever handle · 659 weeks ago

at my local retailer the price difference is $10 CDN ($117 vs $107) BUT you also get the limited edition "sooner"
Hmm,
Has anyone got the stats on box weight and dimensions.. by any chance? I know it's fairly unlikely, but if someone has access to those details I would appreciate them. :) ).. I guess I could use the previous big box as a guide but if the details are floating about somewhere..

Kos
It doesn't seem like it would be THAT hard to me to take all the DK stuff and convert them to Chaos. Just paint them differently, maybe scrape off some angel wings, throw on a little green stuff to make them more plague-y... and there you go!

Also, is it just me, or does the plasma cannon tactical marine look like he's got a power armored GK helmet on?

It's a variation of a master crafted or veteran helmet if memory serves.

The grey knight-esque marine helmets are actually called "crusader" style helmets, at least according to the Black Templar sprue and a couple other things I've seen.

That same helmet is also on the SM command squad champion. They're just rare space marine helmets (though grey knights get to run around looking pimp with whole squads wearing that helmet).
Because they're "special" and the Emperor told them so when they were very small...
Never really warmed to Chaos in 40K (love them in Fantasy though). However, those Cultists are some of the best models I've seen since the new Dark Eldar last year. It would be nice if you could base an army around them when the new Codex arrives.

They should be a troops choice, and rumour has it that Typhus turns them into zombie-type things with FnP etc.

As an Alpha Legion player they'll be meatshields for my Terminators... :D
I think they have overdone it on the paintjob. Wetblends, NMM, Freehands on a starter box?
The kids will like it though..
Why does the Chaplain's plasma pistol have a scope on it?

Go play Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine on PC/Xbox and you'll understand why. It has a reasonable range so a scope to be a bit more accurate for shooting doesn't seem out of place. Also, the question should always be 'Why not?'
I loved that game. Mostly stuck out to me because none of the other pistol models did and it struck me that it might be something different.
Scope on a pistol seems a bit odd anyway.

Unless it's a laser pointer type thing. I can't really see anyone putting any pistol close enough to their eyeline for a more normal scope to help - especially not a plasma pistol.

I suppose it could be linked to his helmet optics?
I seem to recall fluff on the SM armour systems mentioning that the targeting 'laser' above the barrel on a standard bolter is actually a targeting optic, interfaced into the Marine's helmet optics. Wouldn't be a far stretch to say that they've got the same tech integrated into other weapons.

And yeah, the words 'plasma pistol' and 'face' shouldn't appear in any sentence together..
You ever wonder why Marines don't have eyebrows? It's because they all take turns at being the Plasma Gunner.
