Black Templar Bikers: Close Combat Hybrid

So... surprise, surprise, Firepower over on B&C was not happy with the biker list I put together for him. Apparently BT fluff says they like CC? Who knew? :P

Laeroth, myself and I'm sure some others looked at trying to make CC bikerz 'competitive'. We looked at BT options for bikers before so this should be reasonably easy. We all know why marines are not the best in CC, so we need to do our best to change that. Well, we know that BT bikers are expensive and trying to gear them for CC makes them all the more pricey - an IC to add some punch is pretty much a must. The list kinda needs a cheap gimmick, because we don't really have the points to build-in enough of a support element.

Let's look at the list...

Emperor's Champion - Accept and Challenge - 140

Reclusiarch - Bolt Pistol, Space Marine Bike, Frag Grenades, Krak Grenades - 129

Dreadnought - MM, HF, EA - Drop Pod - 160

Crusader Squad (5) - Meltagun, Powerfist - Drop Pod - 135

Crusader Squad (5) - Meltagun, Powerfist - Drop Pod - 135

Crusader Squad (5) - Meltagun, Powerfist, 4 Neophytes - Drop Pod - 175

Bike Squad (3) - Power weapon x2, Meltagun, MM Attack Bike, Krak Grenades - 195

Bike Squad (3) - Power weapon x2, Meltagun, MM Attack Bike, Krak Grenades - 195

Land Speeder Squadron (2) - MM/HF - 150

1998

The EC obviously runs with the big squad for some more ablative wounds. The squads unfortunately don't have double melta, but there we go. You have melta in every single squad and you should do just fine in combat. The bikes aren't uberkilly by any means, but have double melta AND 9 power weapon attacks on the charge (with re-rolls to hit). Everything poses a risk and everything needs to be dealt with. With BT drop pod rules, that won't be overly easy.

My biggest concern about the list is anti-infantry... but you've got 3 dreads to lock-up units, all with heavy flamers and the speeders can provide some more template love should it be necessary.

With no drop pod assault rule this force should almost always be in reserve and preferably go 2nd of course. That will mean we only need to weather 3-5 turns of shooting . With the bikes, speeders and drop pods you should be able to react to whatever you're facing. Not all crusader squads need to be dropped in you opponents face, but you need to overload his/her lines and then use the bikers as support/back-up/reactionary.

It's not pretty, but it should do well. Not win competitions, but will get you wins.

So... thoughts?

p.s. Laeroth... army builder fails at adding-up!

The bikes aren't much of a force in this list and are the only unit which cannot deepstrike. Whilst BT Pods are fun in being able to reserve deny, I'd think this list might work better on table and rushing forward. Problem is expensive BT costs! :(

Yeah the problem is space marines can do the bike assault so much better since theirs get 3++ storm shields and FNP. The BT get re-rolls to hit, but big whoop compared to storm shields and FNP and crazy more attacks. You're doing god's work trying to make this work, but it's tilting at windmills.

I've tried the techmarine (yes, that's right a techmarine) with full servo on bike with the rest of the squad for CC.
And on the charge is pretty painful (to the enemy).
But as stated on the post, marine bikes are pricey, CC bike even more, so the techmarine with the squad is kinda of a point sink.
