Email in: Tau Help

"What's up Kirby?

I'm currently pondering doing a Tau army and I would like your help with my list. A couple of things. My thoughts behind the units I took. The Shas'els I took cause they're cheap and shoot like basic marines. Battle suits cause I think stealth suits, the alternative, could use some work and I think Crisis are better for dealing with light armour and MEQ, which I will see in my neck of the woods. kroot are decent chump blockers and cover save granters perhaps. They aren't beating up Khorne Berserkers but they can hold them back some.

Fire warriors for grabbing an objective later in the game or on my half of the table. Pathfinders to markerlight stuff and cause vespids stink. I like the pirhana models and they can be used to disrupt movement of the enemy. i know if the enemy troops have unrestricted path to my guys, then my game is over. I know Tau can't fight lol. Broadsides for the vehicle smack down. I am not sure about the configuration though. That is actually what prompted me to email you. Not sure about that. The hammer head is good for mobile smack down or template dropping.

I put gun drones on the DF and HH because I would dismount those guys early for more chump blocking goodness. Except KP of course. Anyway take a look and tell me how I can improve this. I haven't using played Tau since 3rd Edition when 9 broadsides and 72 fire warriors was a "fun" army. Lol!

Hey Marc. Solid Tau list and excellent reasoning on why bad units suck :P. Biggest issue with your list is 8 crisis suits. When 1750 lists are generally packing in 10, you need to make sure your 2000 lists are doing the same. That being said one of the Shas'Els and the extra points you have spare can easily net you two extra suits (taking you to 9 total). Dropping the Kroot squads to 17 (10+7 hounds; 17 is the magic number at that range for Ld checks) and the Fire Warriors to 6 (they are hiding in the Devilfish so you don't really need more than the min-sized squad) and you've got your 10th Crisis at 1995 points. I'm not a huge fan of the gun drones on the Hammerhead but you don't really have the points which is fair enough. I would however exchange one of the disruption pods on the Piranhas for a target lock so the squad has one TL and one DP (50% of squad = cover) which keeps cover and allows you to split fire if they survive. Great for 5pts.

In regards with the Broadside setup, they are going to be very static without ASS but being able to split fire is important so I'd leave them they way they are currently unless you can find 25 points to upgrade each squad (2x ASS upgrade and team-leader so you can still get Drone Controller and Target Lock). Problem is finding those points after we just shaved most of your extraneous items.

So these changes essentially streamline your list and importantly improve the firepower of the list to the level it should be at with the 10 crisis. I also used a picture from your blog :P; those Thunderwolves look amazing BTW.

He could drop a disruption pod on each squad of piranha to get the 10 points for the burst cannons on the hammer head, the other way is to drop down to 1 gun drone 1 shield drone on the broadsides.

sadly, the recent Tau FAQ denies Tau players this possibility. Either all piranhas in a team take disruption pods, or none. No more tricks :(
Oh jolly good, I was wanting to ask some Tau questions :)

We know that some sneaky tricks are needed for Tau, a lá x4+1 for Kroot flocks to improve morale check numbers, keeping Suits in twos until points demand they are in three so they can regroup by not getting below 50%, etc.

What about wound allocation tricks for Suit teams?
1] team leader, bonding knife, MP, PR, mt
2] MP, PR, mt
even if you just arm no.3 the same as no.2, at least the team leader doesn't have to wear that third plasma gun shot, for instance.

Also, T1-2 your Suits are there for killing transports. What if no.3 was a Deathrain job [either flamer or targeting array]. He contributes better anti-transport shots in those critical two turns and then when someone has to go, it'll be him as the increased shootiness of Fire Knives is warranted.

Wound allocation is crucial for TWC, why not Suits? Anything that allows you to heap wounds onto Shas Un'luck'y is a good thing right?

Suits are prime targets for krak missiles and such. Fangs, Blood Devs, Preds, Lances on elf things, etc. All regular gear for your foe. Why no hard-wired drone controller+gundrones for either the Shas-els or team leaders? Yes, gun drones are not as cheap as they should be, but losing 10 pts of drones is better than 62 pts of Suit?
Two drones are certainly worth the same points of Infantry if it keeps those heavy weapons [who don't have much in the way of mech to go after] of your precious Suits, even if for just one more turn.

Thoughts?

Team Leader on the Suits is enough (and 15p for wound shenanigans is well worth it), but BKs wont help much. Gun drones could help, but each one is 10p. Drop the Drones on the HH for Burst Cannons (10p saved) or SMS (better weapon) + Target Lock. Drop the Kroot down to 13 for even more points (try to get 6 Broadsides, as you'll need the AT @ 2k). Beyond that (and Kirby's suggestions), consider swapping two or three piranhas for pathfinders and other things. Getting 10 suits is important, as well. If you find the Piranhas successful, more power to you, but 2x Pathfinder squads allows for some excellent force multiplication, and gives you three convenient hulls for your suits to hide behind (hint, use a low base to BLoS of the suits on your Fishes/HH).

Beyond that, it's an okish list.
Wound allocation usually isn't worth it unless you take simple things like a Team Leader upgrade. Beyond that, you are probably really reducing the quality of firepower in your squad - above 1500 points, most Crisis squads want 3 fireknife (MP+PR+multitracker), and deviations from that tend to reduce their effectiveness. As for no drones, partly it's points, partly it's because smaller squads are easier to hide behind vehicles and terrain and such, and partly because drones are easier to kill and make you take a morale check. I don't know about you, but I always cringe when I take morale checks on my Crisis suits.
Agree with Sage and tzeentchling regarding wound allocation on Crisis though I'd always rather 2x Piranha over 2x Pathfinder at this points level as you have the guns to not need as many markerlights. As tau move up in points they need less markerlights as they have more firepower behind them, etc.

Kirby I appreciate the time you took to critique my list. I am going to make some changes to it based on some of your tips.
