fester has another Tournament... failure.

Hi lads and ladettes,

Your intrepid Ork Player/Reporter fester here once again reporting on how he failed at 40k. Again.
Long time no see. And well, will be longer again until the next time given that I have just welcomed fester Jnr into this world (that's #2 for those who are counting) and I have all but been stopped playing 40k until 2012. Joy! Saying this, I will quickly throw together another post for tonight chroncling my Hybrid BA for people to laugh at and ridicule.

Anyway, onto the tournament.

The last weekend of June was the local RTT - Cowcon.

I turned up with the Cursed Ork Army of Doom (aka MVB/Archies/The Ork build). More on the curse later.

Knowing this tournament was a comp'd event, and knowing that for this list to place I had to major win 5/5 games, I had my game face on, big time. The event was also comp seeded, meaning that the first round you played against another player with the similar comp score as you. I knew I was just about the toughest list there, so it was going to be rough.

Game 1: Razor Wolves.

Joy of joy. I drew the lowest comp army there. Razor wolves with long fangs. Luckily, the guy didnt have too much experience with them, and I pushed across the table with ease, and all but tabled him.
Thankfully, I drew a high KP army on the KP mission. Phew.

Game 2: Blood Angels
A hybrid style force that I had actually beat (this exact army and player) at the previous RTT I attended.
Mission was "Milk the Cows", you get one token for each objective you control at the end of your turn. Win conditions are decided by the margin. Once again, major victory.
Highlight of the game for me: He brings a squad of jumpers and surrounds a trukk. He then Wrecks it, Kareen result is the "Explode" equivalent. He loses 2 guys, deliberately takes 2 plebs and breaks coherency, then fails the leadership test and flees. Did you know that you cannot rally if you are not in coherency, and that by the letter of the law, you cannot move in any way but straight back (unless you are blocked of course), even on a run move, to get back into coherency. That basicall won me the game as his nerve was then broken.

Game 3: Thousand Sons.

No, not counts as, legit 1000 sons from C:CSM.
Mission: Escape Capsule. End of Game turn 2/3, a capsule falls from the sky (random location in the middle of the board), only objective. Win margin based on VP's of troops on the objective.
He saw my army, (he and I are good mates regardless), shook my hand and said "I have no chance". I simply said that I had to deal with his Daemon Prince and Greater Daemon, and if I couldn't he won. Those daemons ate all 9 kans, 2 squads of boys and everything else I could find, just to keep them off the only objective.

Game 4: Orks

Another local player, a good tourney player, who I hadn't to this point played. I really was concerned with his list, as I tend to lose against other Ork players.
5 Objectives as per NOVA placing. Major Victory to me again, only after I managed a last turn charge to pull him off one of his two objectives.

Game 5: Footdar

That's right ladies, top table, last game, footdar.
Mission, Spearhead, KP. I knew I had no chance in this mission. I had 22 KP to his 12. He outranged me, out gunned me, and I had basically nothing that could deal with his Wraithlords or his Avatar. Sigh.
Result, massacre defeat.
Turn 1 he took 4 KP off me. This pretty much summed up the game for me. Anything he shot at died in a ball of flame, and no kareen results went my way. Apart from that, yeah, I made a few mistakes, and they hurt. Killa Kans in terrain (all 3 squads) moved 9 inches over 3 turns, running each turn. What can you do when the dice finally fail.

The Curse:
So the curse, I hear you say?
This list has lost only 3 games across 3 tournaments. Each time, it lost to the eventual tourney winner. This list is cursed to be always beaten by the eventual winner.

Regardless, a great time was had by all, and I got knocked from 1st overall at the start of Game 5, to 7th overall, and not even best general (by a long margin).

This reminds me of a time when Kirby lost to ORKS!!!! WAAAGH :P
It is nice to see orks beating face for a change and glad to see armies that the internet says suck kicking butt. To bad your army is cursed.

Reminds me of the time Kirby lost to footdar.
I'd be interested in the footdar's army list / batrep if you find the time.

Just because that seems like an auto-win in my opinion, KP might suck yeah, but I figured you'd wipe him out.
If footdar are so terrible, why do the authors of this site keep failing against it??? :P

Maybe someone ought to write up a guide on how to build good footdar since it seems to be turning up in more tourneys these days?

I too would love to see a) the list that beat fester and b) a guide (or really, more coverage) on eldar. Yes they are overpriced, but it seems in the right hands with a little luck on matchups they are still competitive.

No, Blaise, in extremely experienced hands, and if their opponent makes mistakes, or doesn't have the tools to take out Wraithlords/Avatar (Las, Plas spam, Missile Launchers, and so on), THEN Footdar can hurt. But anti-horde, flamers, and any decent assaulting units will rip them apart.

Weird cause I've never seen footdar in the UK...ever!
Wait, you named BOTH of your kids "fester junior?" Dude. Not Cool.
If I could pull myself away from my Marines I would be so tempted by Orks.

Okay, too many points. But basically the meks and the burnas go in the trukks they swipe from the small shoota units, the warbuggies run interference for the burnas as they charge up the battlefield while everyone else strolls up the battlefield shooting as they go. Get up close, unleash 12 flamer templates per squad, profit. Kans and Dreads get kustom mega-blastas because AP2 threatens terminators, and "gets hot" doesn't matter on a vehicle.

Those burna trukks are going to be huge targets, have you considered 2x loota units and one burna in a BW? The BW is great for a big mek to ride in. Also your 12 man squads don't have 3 RLs.
You gotta have a KFF, man. Not only does it give your troops an actual chance at an armour save, but if you put the KFF-ed Mek in a vehicle that vehicle, and every vehicle within 6", gets a 4+ cover save at all times. I can't count the number of railgun slugs I've had bounce off those damnable things.

Loota + Big shoota spam is fun to play... but not against... orks can have way too many guns
Winning 4 games out of 5 doesn't seem like failure to me, go easier on yourself!
Boy, from the title of this post I expected a significantly less triumphant series of battles. 4 out of 5 games won is hardly a failure, even if you didn't rank higher at the end of the day. And you smashed two of the most dangerous Marine chapters going!

For what it's worth my Eldar list was:

Avatar
Eldrad
Fire dragons in serpent
Harlequins
2 x 10 avengers
10 guardians
5 avengers in serpent
2 x wraithlord
3 x war walkers

Everything had scatter laser/shuriken cannon.

Our game was pretty much me deploying in the corner and blasting av10 vehicles with 50+ st 6 shots a turn then counter attacking the kans with a fortunes avatar and wraithlords. Avengers took care of any dismounts after their trucks blew up (as fester said, Kareen rolls went my way).

I was happy to play orks too, I'd played (and more or less tabled) 3 grey knight armies in a row and I wanted something different. Unfortunately for fester the matchup was 100% in my favor from the outset.

And yeah, I agree with the comments above about footdar. They're overpriced ad lack the tools to be a truly comparative army, but in a comped environment they go well. That said, cowcon was my 7th tournament in a year with the same army and a more or less identical list, so it has taken me a while to perfect it.

Once you have it down pat, it works like clockwork.
