My Armies: Thunderbubble @ 1750

(picture from b.smoove @ A Gentlemen's Ones) Kirby has 1750 armies? Apparently. This is one of my potential armies for Centurion and I've played a couple games with it lately both on Vassal and IRL (you'll get a real life battle-report sometime tomorrow. I recommend sunglasses). This was an army concept originally coined by GWvsJohn but no one paid attention to it (speaking of which, he has been seen recently...ooo). May have to do with the silly name thundergate, I mean seriously; bubble > gate. I then wrote a How To post on this concept and an army list to follow. Anyway, this is a list which takes the emphasis on mech armies by the Vanilla SM codex and rolls with a but of MSU in mind (i.e. Razorbacks). Whilst this is normally done better by SW or BA, SW don't have access to TH/SS terminators and BA can't fit as much into the list. Obviously this list uses TH/SS Terminators to provide a screen and offensive hammer unit to SM mech.

The biggest problem? Anti-infantry. Due to pumping a lot of points into firepower units like LasPlas Razorbacks, AC/LC Preds and Riflemen dreadnoughts, anti-infantry is at a premimum in this list. Whilst Speeders can bring some flamers to bear and combi-flamers on the min-sized Tactical squads, there is a definite weakness against Horde armies. This puts a bit of ceiling on this list as it caters more towards anti-tank. This can be rectified somewhat by downgrading AC/LC Preds to Dakka Preds and adding more Speeders but you lose a fair amount of anti-tank shots. I haven't had much issue with downing infantry in my trial games so far but I also haven't met a proper horde. Whilst I should be able to delay them with my multiple tank chassis, there's not real way for me to stunt the horde.

Anyway, here's the list in its current compliation:

"SW don't have access to TH/SS terminators"

Bullshit Kirby.

Know your coicies before spurting shit.

WG+TDA+SS+TH (or CF, same cost after all) comes in at 63pts a model.

315pts for 5 TH+SS Termies? Yeah right. this is wy they aren't seen, but they do exist. Infact, we can do a mirror list in SW's and be 15 pts over, so trim the TH to the PW and Bam!:

1,750pts Modified Space Wolf Thunder Bubble Rip:

HQ -
Rune Priest, Living Lightning, Tempests Wrath - 100pts

Elites -
5 Wolf Guard (4xTDA, SS, TH; 1xTDA, SS, PW) - 300pts
1 Rifleman Dreadnought - 125pt

Autolas isn't really good for marines, and what kind of bubble is 5 terminators strong?

I don't think you can make the bubble work at 1750 points. Need those extra 250.

I think you need the 2nd TH squad, even at 1750. I'd even drop a las/plas squad to do it. 15 marines in 3 tanks is plenty of scoring at 1750 and if people target your RB over Termies, Dreads and Preds you should be in a good place.

So I've been having a play around, this is the list I'm looking at running. I'd love to add a chaplain or use a Termy Libby (model looks cool).

@Taak; don't you love eloquence on the internet? WG are not Terminators, they have a completely different role. You want to spend an extra 100+ points to get TH/SS Wolfguard instead of TH/SS Termies? Go for it. Then realise Space Wolves do a list like this much better by actually playing to the Wolf Codex where MSU GH run around backed up by Long Fangs, TWC as combat deteriants, etc. You can run this as a Wolf list but skimp on the combat bubble-wrap.

@GWvsJohn; aye it's not really a 1750 list of top-level competitiveness but since games always seem to be 1750 around here and it was requested ^^. I'd rather only the 5 Termies at 1750, it doesn't wrap much as VT2 and Francois pointed out but it is a combat deterent.

@Jason; stay away from Chaplains. List looks alright otherwise and probably something GWvsJohn as going for.

What about Null Rod Inquisitors?

If you're worried about anti-infantry, why not drop the las-plas backs down to HB Backs? That's 140 points right there to play around with, which could be another two Speeders or 3 more Terminators. Three twin-linked HB shots x4 is a decent amount of anti-infantry.

@Jason; no. Inefficient and eh.

@Kris; YOu lose the point of the list. Whilst the list isn't balanced it has a point which the LasPlas re-inforce. If I wanted the list to be more balanced @ 1750 I think MM/flamer/Rhino tacs would be a better idea.

Termy Libby and SS v.s Typhoon Speeders?

Thanks for the nod. I don't comment on the site often (less than that actually), but I'm a dedicated follower and flattered to see my work here.

Cheers lads, both for the link and for the thought-provoking article.

Can we please move away from the be all end all that is Raz spam MSU? Really getting old here and I feel it takes away from inventiveness.
