Event Horizon Battle Report Game 4: Blood Angels vs Space Marines

Day 2 has arrived! It looked like I was playing Julian the night before (would rather play him later in the day ;)) but ended up getting Rohnan whom I hadn't played before, but know. He's had a good tourney record past year and a half and was given a special reward for this (don't know if it's been announced so not saying what it is...)! So first congrats to him. Second, time to beat him :P.

I had gone over what I knew of the lists the night before with some brief thoughts (I knew there was a double Stormraven BA, Scarabfarm, Julian's Necrons, Fatecrusher & Rohnan's Marines) and the first two missions were the best possible for me against all of these lists - no Kill Points at all. Game 4 was table quarters primary with objectives secondary and Dawn of War deployment. Rohnan's list looked the following whilst mine can be found here:

Event Horizon Battle Report Game 3: Blood Angels vs Space Wolves

Game 3 was against Grant O'Dwyer and was filmed*, my Round 1 opponent from Leviathon. Re-match time! Mission was Spearhead with Table Quarters primary and Kill points secondary (so 3 KP Missions Day 1, I was worried about this heading in with an MSU army in being knocked out before the top 8). Grant was using a very Grey Hunter heavy list with four near full squads + character and Wolf Guard support. Add in some Thunderwolves for big hitting power and Scouts for utility and the only thing lacking from his list was firepower - he still had some Long Fangs and other ranged weapons (CML, plasma, Rune Priest, etc.) but it wasn't what we expect from SWolves. One too many characters IMO which could have bought another fire support unit.

Event Horizon Battle Report Game 6: Blood Angels vs Chaos Daemons

So unfortunately I'm having some issues with the video feed for Games 3 & 5 - unless you want to watch the full two hours at least... Because the frame rate is so slow (8 FPS), whenever I re-render them with an improved frame rate they start jumping and skipping. I've got game 6 to work though at a sped up pace (around a 28 min video) so Game 6 comes up before the other games and, well it's the tournament final so what's not to love! I've added commentary as well and you can see both Part 1 and Part 2 below. The normal text & picture based battle report can be seen below as well - you can use the video alone, not at all or in conjunction with the text/pictures! I think looking at both gives you the most complete picture but that's me.

Event Horizon Battle Report: Blood Angels vs Tau

You can see my list here. First game was five objectives primar in the X formation and 2KP marginal as secondary with Pitched Battle deployment. Lee's Tau list was Broadside, Deathrain Crisis and Kroot heavy - good core units but a bit lacking in that little extra bit such as plasma rifles and Pirhanas. I won roll-off and because he lacked these options, gave him first turn. Yes, that meant I took 8 Broadsides to the face - it really meant nothing to my ASM moving up into midfield (which Pirhanas could have blocked, Plasma could have shot). On the flip side, I had reactionary deployment with some nice terrain pieces and the ability to move onto those objectives last.

You're going to have to excuse the photos as well - I kept getting put on tables where the sun was creeping across and photos of half light, half dark suck :P.

Kirby's Event Horizon Quick Re-cap

Just to spice things up as 5th edition fades, I decide to win an actual two-day event, yay. First things first - I didn't take 45 minutes for one turn in the final game, thank you Denis and David for that over-exaggeration :P. However, I did take 23 minutes for one turn, twice as long as it should take and I apologised to my opponent for it. So, to the Event proper...

I took the modified Flamestorm list at 1850 with some Attack Bikes, Mephiston and ACLC Pred support with all their LoS issues (list below). The Event Horizon missions were NOVA based with two major changes. First, marginal KP was changed from three to two. As we found out based on 3++con statistics, marginal KP at three was signifcantly different compares to the other two in terms of providing a winner/loser or drawing. It'll be interesting to see if this change brings them all closer together in that department (i.e. KP back into line). It felt good, this coming from an MSU based army which was always bringing at least 5-6 more KP per game (and most of them easy). The second change was the number of tiers - NOVA is normally three main tiers with a fourth tier always being Victory Points. Event Horizon was two tiers + Victory Points. This put more focus on BOTH of the tiers without always having the option of say five objectives for an MSU army (nor were all objective games always five objectives).

Event Horizon Day 2 Recap

So haters gonna be hatin but our beloved Mr Kirby went 6-0 with his Blood Angels to win the tourney :) Little bit of unintentional slow-playing in the last game but its all good in the hood ^^ He was very 'rainman' and focused while playing and whilst he didn't have loads of experience with the BAs, he was able to go undefeated through the tourney anyway. Jimmy (AKA The Wizard) came 2nd with his daemons which shows that most of the time, experience with the army (mostly regardless of what army) counts for a lot more than just bringing a list that you've seen on the net but don't have the experience with... I (Vince) has a good comeback with my Orkies Day 2 going 3-0 (for overall 3-3 after a poor first day). Unfortunately the Orks were showing their age and GW neglect a fair bit, especially against newer stuff like SW and GK and the older, harder matchup stuff like Deathwing. Jason C finished 4-2 with his IG which was a good showing too :D Anyway, that's the prelim update after the tourney, Kirby will do a fuller recap of events soon. As always, Denis ran a great tourney and a huge thanks for that (as well as helpers like David, techs like Russell and both paint judgers Kyle and Luke). It was good to have a last hurrah at the death of 5th ed, I will miss your stinging barbed whips of fearless boyz squads exploding, needing 6s to hit tanks with clawz and other Ork related matters :)

Event Horiozn 2012 Update

I'm 3-0 into Day 2, Vince is 0-3.

Jason C is 2-1 losing final game to Scarab farm and just misses out as one of the top 2-1s going through. Top 8 includes two Necrons, two Blood Angels, one Daemons (bye Round 3, lucky Jimmy aka The Wizard :P), two Space Marines, one Grey Knights.

I beat Tau, GK and Space Wolves with game against SW filmed.

Australia's next NOVA tournament - Event Horizon

This is the 2nd year running for Event Horizon and hopefully it will be bigger and better than last year! For that to happen though, you have to attend. 3++con was an excellent success with over 50 participants so there's no reason Event Horizon cannot be bigger considering the drop-outs we had! Here are the details:

Event Horizon Missions

Event Horizon – Missions 2012

In Event Horizon 2011, we used four basic mission types – 5 Objectives, Modified Kill Points (win by 3 or more), Table Quarters, and Victory Points – in a tier system to determine the winner.
Following feedback from players, I have taken a slight twist to the system in 2012 to create more variety between games while maintaining consistency across the playing field. We still have Objectives, Modified Kill Points, Table Quarters, and Victory Points, with the following changes,

Game 6 Event Horizon Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Chaos Daemons

Daemons you say? This should be a cake walk. Spoiler: it was. The pictures are pretty bad here so you'll have to excuse me and the game isn't exactly that fun but it does highlight some key things. Like how poorly Daemons matchup against a 5th edition army. Let's start from the beginning then and I'll try to keep this brief. Mission was Table Quarters, Objectives, Kill Points.

Game 6 was against Simon Rainbow who helped provide some of the terrain. I will need to talk him it seems! He played Michael Cruise (the Footdar) in Round 5 which make my Game 4 loss even more hurtful. No offense to Simon but I would have had an easy Game 5 and be sitting in the final for Game 6. Ah well, that's what I get for playing poorly! I cannot remember the upgrades Simon took on his units but there was not shooting and everything was Slannesh themed with the basic outline being something like this:

4x Heralds
3x5x Fiends w/Might
5x8 Daemonettes
1x 5x Seekers
3x Daemon Prince

Game 5 Event Horizon Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Witchunters/Imperial Guard

Let there be more Imperial Guard! Rawr. So after my terrible game against Footdar it was time to redeem myself and at least go 5-1. Oh wait, I failed on Day 1 so the best I could do was 4-2. Go me lol. I got matched up with Jonathan who ended up winning 2nd best sports as I recall with an Imperial Guard + Witchunters list. Unfortunately though we got set up on the same table I played my first game on! Silly fester program thing. The game was Pitched Battle with Kill Points, Table Quarters and objectives being the winning conditions.

Anyway, Jonathan's list looked something like this and my list can seen here as usual.

Game 4 Event Horizon Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Eldar

This is the only one you guys care about isn't it? My losing to Footdar. Well let's get into it then :). My opponent was Michael Cruise (who has written a brief report of his experience here) who was using Footdar. I must admit, probably to my own downfall, I was extremely confident heading into the game. Nothing against Michael as an opponent but, and Michael admitted this, he was going to have a hard time dealing with all my MEQ and vehicles. Overconfidence and...well you'll have to see won't you >.<.

The mission was spearhead with objectives, table quarters and kill points as the mission parameters. Michael won the roll-off and opted to go first against my firepower using the central piece of terrain to his full advantage (it blocked LoS to all infantry) and I deployed most of my mech behind and directly across from him to be able to gain cover from his few ranged anti-tank shots. With that the board was set and the game was to begin... Here's Michael's list btw (mine is here):

Game 3 Event Horizon Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Imperial Guard

<-- Wayne's army in a different game

I know, another IG right? This Mission was DoW Kill Points, Objectives and Table Quarters against Wayne. Annoying match-up here as IG obviously has a lot more ability to pop tanks of mine than I of his and he has the ant-infantry to deal with my 40+ MEQs. What I need to be able to do then is tie on KP or if I get good rolls against his tanks, clean up his infantry quickly for cheap KPs. Unlikely compared to what he can do to me so board control is more important. I cannot recall his list (Dennis, help? :P) but it went something like:

Event Horizon Round Up

Hey all. So finally uncapped and had some time to reflect on the weekend of gaming that was Event Horizon. Firstly, massive props to Dennis for running such a fun and competitive tourney, I sure hope more of these pop up and EH increases in popularity next year :D

The Gaming: 2-4 overall with the Orks, not bad for my first 6 games with them ;) I really struggled in KP missions, mainly because I'm Orks so can't really kill anything whereas the army bleeds KPs everywhere :P I tried to play the list quite passively, not really rushing at my opponents till the 6th game where I changed it up a bit. Works quite well enough, but as I mentioned before, the list really struggles at actually killing stuff. Surviving was fine, but killing 1) terminators, 2) vehicles, 3) MCs was a nightmare. Its not really a symptom of the particular build either, I think Orks generally struggle with the aforementioned things, just because about the only way they force lots of saves is in combat where you will lose a lot of boyz in the process.

So what else didn't work so well? The trukks :( Totally crap lol. Especially giving up such an easy KP was tough because I couldn't really match opponents as they started to take out some trukks and I couldn't really respond at range.

Game 1 Event Horizon Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Imperial Guard

Game 1 was against Chee who ended up coming 1st Overall and his Imperial Guard. The most impressive thing about his army IMO was his scratch built Hydra turrets. Made my Razorturrets look lame...if they didn't before :P. Game was Pitched Battle with mission parameters of Objectives --> KP --> Quarters. I won the roll-off and elected to go first choosing the left side of the board. With deployment I weighted the right side with more bodies to tempt Chee into a refuse flank on the opposite side which would allow me to control most of the board. If he split his deployment or refuse flanked on the side I had more on, I had enough to take him head on. My list is here. His list was roughly:
