(New) Daemons Review with Archnomad and Chumbalaya

*Note, don't know why but pics are being weird just now, so you're going to have to live with 2 and a wall of text effect*

Blue: Archnomad
Red: Chumbalaya

Hey people, 3 and a half games in now (well, it was at true at time of writing, now it’s 6) with the new White Dwarf
release of Daemons (DoC from now on), and I'm going to share some of the stuff I've learned.  I’m just here for the free food.  You promised finger sandwiches. I’ll email you a pizza roll. This is gonna be part of a (hopefully) series of articles that I'm going to be co-writing with Chumbalaya , hi internet, covering (also hopefully) the whole book and the options available to you in 6th edition.

3++ Nerdcast: Episode 4 - Grenades, Sisters, Daemons & Marines. Oh my!

Biscuit is back for Episode 4! We're still missing an AbusePuppy though... This episode also includes the afterparty discussion where we stop trying to pretend to stick on topic or be reasonable and just chatter away like a bunch of nerds. That's the 2nd download below.

This episode we discuss grenades (~1:10) and their new uses and the impact of 6th edition on some of the armies we haven't discussed before. This includes Sisters of Battle (~12:00), Chaos Daemons (~18:00) and Space Marines (~24:00). Ironically, all three are talked about in relation to allies more than not...

Chaos Daemons in 6th: Initial Analysis

Everybody changed big time with the new edition, and so did our favorite red-headed stepchild. Daemons aren't getting a lot of press these days, but I think they are one of armies that received the most buffs.  I'm going to do a more comprehensive overview as I get more practice in, eventually creating a new guide for 6th edition, but here are the quick hits.

The biggest buffs to Daemons:

Event Horizon Battle Report Game 6: Blood Angels vs Chaos Daemons

So unfortunately I'm having some issues with the video feed for Games 3 & 5 - unless you want to watch the full two hours at least... Because the frame rate is so slow (8 FPS), whenever I re-render them with an improved frame rate they start jumping and skipping. I've got game 6 to work though at a sped up pace (around a 28 min video) so Game 6 comes up before the other games and, well it's the tournament final so what's not to love! I've added commentary as well and you can see both Part 1 and Part 2 below. The normal text & picture based battle report can be seen below as well - you can use the video alone, not at all or in conjunction with the text/pictures! I think looking at both gives you the most complete picture but that's me.

Email in: 40k Daemons

"Hey Kirby,

Hope it’s warmer for you up there than it is down here in Tassie (you’d think growing up in Oregon back in the States would have prepared me for this, but nothing prepares you for that perpetual, winter long sea chill).

Anyway, this is about a 40k Daemons list. So far I don’t have much to work from, so I’d like your advice and numbers. You see, this is a somewhat interesting project – everything (initially at least) has to be Tzeentch because (initially at least) every model in the army has to be a self sculpted piece. While I may later break this and add in some Daemons of Khorne or Nurgle for instance (and maybe even a few of the less ugly GW models), for now, as I’ve said, it’s all gotta be the Big T.

Army Comparison: Warriors of Chaos vs. Daemons of Chaos

Battlereporter

This Fantasy Battles Army Comparison pits the forces of the Chaos Gods against each other in a battle royale.  Each of these armies fared rather well in 7th Edition, where Daemons were widely considered one of the top tier armies.  In 8th the Daemons have fallen from the top of the pedestal but are still considered quite strong.  The Warriors have had a rougher transition to 8th Edition, as the units that were considered powerful or weak respectively are almost completely reversed.  This change took a while for players to understand, but it appears that Warriors of Chaos are also quite competitive.

Email in: Daemons of Chaos help wanted

GentleBen

"Hi Kirby

I have been a long time reader of your site which has really been quite interesting for me to read. I can't find many Daemons of Chaos articles on your site, but I am hopeful someone will be able to answer some of my questions

In my first ever game, my Daemon army was playing vanilla marines. He had two librarians, which seemed a bit odd, because this player never uses psychic powers normally. It turned out that both of his Librarians had Null Zone, something I had no counters for, due to the bubble range being longer than my longest charge ranges.

Game 6 Event Horizon Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Chaos Daemons

Daemons you say? This should be a cake walk. Spoiler: it was. The pictures are pretty bad here so you'll have to excuse me and the game isn't exactly that fun but it does highlight some key things. Like how poorly Daemons matchup against a 5th edition army. Let's start from the beginning then and I'll try to keep this brief. Mission was Table Quarters, Objectives, Kill Points.

Game 6 was against Simon Rainbow who helped provide some of the terrain. I will need to talk him it seems! He played Michael Cruise (the Footdar) in Round 5 which make my Game 4 loss even more hurtful. No offense to Simon but I would have had an easy Game 5 and be sitting in the final for Game 6. Ah well, that's what I get for playing poorly! I cannot remember the upgrades Simon took on his units but there was not shooting and everything was Slannesh themed with the basic outline being something like this:

4x Heralds
3x5x Fiends w/Might
5x8 Daemonettes
1x 5x Seekers
3x Daemon Prince

Monday Hobby Day - Daemon Style!

While Brolo is off running around with strippers again or whatever he's doing, I write you from cold snowy Madison Wisconsin where the only good things about these next few months of the year is that I don't feel quite so bad staying indoors and working on mini's most of the winter!
Fear not!  Monday Hobby Day will not be missed, you'll just have to listen to me ramble a bit and check out some awesome models!

This week in the hobby I've been working on some BA's still, hanging by to see how I'm going to end up painting my Blood Angels.  Doing some finishing touches on the ultra forge treewoman model I bought for my fantasy wood elf army.  Aside from that, not a whole heck of a lot.

Anyhow, shortly after I started my Blood Angel's project my roommate decided he would like to get back into 40k.  He has always wanted to play Daemons but never went for it.  As he has just sold his old Dark Eldar army to buy some fresh plastic to work with.  He has been somewhat unmotivated as of lately in terms of working on mini's.  Though with this new plastic set and seeing me constantly working on mini's I'm sure he will be back at it any day now.

We worked out a few lists and came up with a few ideas, but when all the dust settled... we needed fiends.

So what are our options for fiends:
Well this is what we came up with, but feel free to offer some other ideas.

Email in: Fwd: thoughts for my daemons?

"Hello Kirby,

I like your articles, especially army comments.

I'm relatively newcomer to daemos. and my core composition on 1800pts is:

4x Herald of Tzeentch, chariot, bolt, we are legion, master of sorcery
3x 4 flamers of tzeentch
2x 4 screamers
2x 5 plaguebearers
2x 5 pink horrors, one unit with bolt
2x daemon prince, mark of tzeentch, bolt, daemonic gaze
Soulgrinder, phlegm

On 1750pts I'll drop one screamers unit (propably)

Email in: My List [1850 Daemons]

"Okay, the first list is one I'd consider tough. It's not the most optimized, but it's close.

I sent that in for a comp check - I wanted to see how they'd score it.

60 is average, so we're shooting for lists that score at least average so we can make up the lack in comp in battle points.

The second list is one I'm toying with. It's meant to score better in comp.

Now... how much better? The trick - as I see it - is to make changes that are worthwhile. If I lose games because of the change, then it wasn't worth it, right?

Anyway, your opinions are always welcome.

NZ Grumpy Daemion Tournament: Day 2 [from Andrew]

Sorry sorry, this is a long time in coming but here's Andrew's Day Two write-up for his NZ tournament! You can check out Day 1 with my comments here. Will put my comments in here as well in blue as per usual. Enjoy.

Day Two
D2: Game One: Clash of Titans

Your HQ, or your selection if you have more than one, is the only part of your army that can score victory points. It can only be killed by another players HQ choice as the “Titan”. Of course others can score wounds against it but the last wound stays until taken by another “Titan”. o.O Very odd.

Craig chose his Librarian and I had to use my Rune Priest.

We rolled off for choice of quarters and won. We got to go first and had to deploy one army in each of our quarters. Deployment was 9” from the centre.

Dave and Matt’s Tyranids (Fantastically painted armies, Matt’s Genestealers all from Space Hulk. Unfortunately I got to engrossed in figuring out how to play the mission and forgot to take photos!) The mission does seem overly complex.

Dave (Big Bugs!)

Hive Tyrant (“Titan”)
Tervigon
3 Hive Guard
Venomthrope
2 Carnifexes
Some Gaunts

Email in: Nids vs Daemons, Big trouble, little tactics

"3+ Crew,

I am a big fan of your tyranid articles and while most of the internet loves to hate them, I have been very successful with them. I think a lot of the lists and tactics here are really helpful, but I have run into one problem - Daemons.

They seem like the anti-nids to me. All the power weapons, MCs with invuls, Tzeench Prince/ fateweaver shooting and damned blood crushers seem to rough to deal with.

I have tried to meet them on the field, but keep getting outmatched in combat. I run take all comers lists and so do my opponents, but even when I run my shooty lists, it seems the shots roll off of them before they get to beat me down or I end up flying away from them the whole game.

I am sure it all comes down to tactics as daemons are very different from the average vehicles and troop options you face when fighting other armies. The two daemon builds I have trouble with are Fatecrusher variants and the 4 chariot of tzeentch armies.
